A 1000 strong mob of Communist invaders clashed with West German police at Helmstedt near the East West frontier. Police used clubs as reinforcements rushed to the area while authorities report thousands arrested overnight and hundreds injured in skirmishes amid pre election tensions.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles called Moscow s firm grip on Eastern Germany a menace to peace and urged an end to the postwar division. He warned China might invade Indochina if guerrillas defeat the French and cautioned Korea style intervention could repeat there. He condemned the continued partition as a scandal and crime and blamed Russia for keeping Germans trapped under Soviet rule.
Des Moines reports Thrill Day at the Iowa State Fair with a cooler breeze easing heat and potentially pushing total attendance toward the 1951 record of 543,461. Farm Machinery Day saw livestock judging of Guernseys Brown Swiss Ayrshires and Red Poll cattle with 4 H pigs lambs and calves also weighed. Only 21 052 attendances were recorded this morning as rain rain gear and newspapers shield spectators from showers. Friday forecast calls for sunshine and cooler temperatures.

Alfred H. Raymond, 69, died Wednesday at his son Jess Raymond's home in Crawfordsville after a period of ill health. He had been a farmer near Columbus Junction and was previously at University Hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Friday at Stephens Funeral Home in Columbus Junction, with burial in Columbus City Cemetery. Survivors include his wife Maude Kauffman, children Jess, Mrs. Alfred Nunnally, and Mrs. Francis James, six grandchildren, a brother William Raymond, and a sister Mrs. Anna Houseal.
President Eisenhower ordered abolition of the Psychological Strategy Board and created an Operations Coordinating Board reporting to the National Security Council. The board aims to coordinate U S security programs in the world struggle with Walter B. Smith as chairman and members including Roger M Keyes Harold E Stassen and C D Jackson. The move follows June recommendations from the Presidents Committee on International Information Activities led by William H Jackson.
Washington AP says the Defense Department canceled a planned Army manpower cut and will keep drafting about 23,000 monthly until peace in Korea stabilizes. A high Pentagon official said a truce does not justify weakening the U S military position, and November draft calls remain at 23,000 unless a firm Communist agreement at the political conference alters plans.
A fire believed started by a cigarette tossed from a passing car burned over 30 acres of grass and timberland four miles west of Richland Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. Firemen from Ollie and Richland fought the blaze on the gravel road to Ollie from Richland. The wind drove the fire to flare in several spots, necessitating a return call after noon. The Stanley Williams farm was scorched but nearby buildings were saved by volunteer workers and firemen. The Williams family had lost their home on an adjoining farm less than a year earlier.
Mrs Miles E Jones aged 90 of Richland died September 2 at 7:15 p.m. in a Mt Pleasant nursing home where she had been a patient for 17 months. Services at 2 p.m. Saturday at Friends Church Richland, Rev D B Weintz officiating. Burial in local Friends cemetery. Survivors: daughters Mrs Fred Leppert Rubio and Mrs O T Wilson Mt Pleasant. sons Everett Richland and R L Jones Mt Pleasant. 11 grandchildren. 32 great grandchildren. 2 great great grandchildren. Preceded by husband, one infant child, and two sons Albert and Fred. She belonged to Rubio Friends church Ladies Aid Crystal Rebekah lodge and Past Noble Grand club.
Belgrade reports that Marshal Tito’s government urged Washington London and Paris to persuade Italy to withdraw extraordinary border measures. Yugopress notes Bebler asked envoys to use influence to ease tension over Trieste as Italy concentrates three divisions on the frontier. Yugoslav policy hints at a 1945 concept reviving full claim to Trieste.
Riverside firemen were called around 10 this morning to the A. H. Glaspey home three miles east of Riverside where a load of baled hay owned by George Parisek of Lone Tree was completely destroyed and the wagon sustained slight damage. The blaze likely started from a tractor pulling the hay. Parisek had cattle in the Glaspey pasture and had just arrived with the hay when it ignited.
Marriage licenses have been issued here to Abdel-Aziz A. Fouad and Maria Elizabeth Leae, both residents of the area. The ceremony date and other details were recorded by the county clerk's office.
The National Mediation Board announced that the 35,000 member independent conductors union has cancelled plans for a nationwide strike for Sept. 10 after reaching an agreement with management on wage demand handling after Oct. 1. The union intends to resume its drive for a new pay scale on Oct. 1 or shortly after, demanding graduated pay in line with locomotive power. Carriers had refused to bargain now, citing current contracts. the action ends later talks on a moratorium period.

In Panmunjom Korea Communist authorities announced the release of Maj. Gen. William F. Dean among a wave of prisoner repatriations during Operation Big Switch. Dean, hailed as Taejon hero and Medal of Honor recipient, arrived at Kaesong and was said to be in good health after three years in captivity.
Funeral services for Mrs Mary K Sojka were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in the Jones funeral home with Dr. C Raymond Reed in charge. Pallbearers were Walter, Alvin, George, Elmer, Raymond and Donald Sojka. Burial was in Riverside cemetery.
Washington firemen responded Wednesday afternoon using the Farmers Mutual fire truck to battle a grass fire at the Harry Schimmelpfenning farm southwest of Washington. The blaze broke out in a field and caused little damage.
Roger Gonzales, 28, a Fairfield foundry worker, confessed to shooting Ernie Shondel, 49, with a .32 pistol during a fight. Shondel’s body was found in a ditch, and a first degree murder charge will be filed. Gonzales, in a stupor, claimed no motive beyond the fight and denied taking Shondel’s wallet.
A Washington woman who found a solid gold pin with five diamonds near the Sunset park pavilion is seeking its owner. An unsuccessful Journal lost and found ad and a jeweler’s note fail to identify the lodge or owner. The pin shows a wreath with a five pointed star and a center number. owners should contact the Journal with that number.

Peter P. Widmer, 74, retired farmer of Wayland, was found dead at his home Sunday night from a heart attack. Graveside services were held at Eicher church with Rev. E B Mullett and Rev. Milton Harder presiding. Born November 1879 in France, he had lived in Wayland 16 years and belonged to Eicher Mennonite Church. Survivors include two sons Dan and John, and three sisters Mrs. J T Wenger, Mrs. J J Rich, and Mrs. Jacob Wenger.
Riverside resident Ans Hart remains at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after a Tuesday highway crash on the Washington Riverside gravel road. Doctors now say the injuries are primarily to her chest with earlier reports of cracked vertebrae revised.
Members of the Strikers women’s bowling league will open their season on September 7 at 6 p.m. at Melody Lanes. Bowling continues on Monday evenings at the same site throughout the season.
