The John Morrell & Co. packing plant in Iowa remains virtually closed with 1,700 idle workers after weekend union management meetings. The dispute centers on management’s right to assign jobs under the contract, with workers refusing pork-cutting duties. the union backs the refusals and the company says it is ready to negotiate.
Washington D C The navy lists 92 survivors arriving at Calcutta from the crew of the cruiser Houston sunk early in 1942 off Java. Readable names include Elmer Lewis G M Wite Ruth Melkad den Adair Miles William Ridgeway Reed Miles Lime Springs Jos eph Tiepel Dele Nepel Walter Kariton Hel ena Quinn and others. The men were reported in good condition after confinement in Thailand.
Hardin County Sheriff reports that only about 3 of the 44 Eldora school escapees remain unaccounted Sunday. Prior escapes see roughly 20 at large while others are confined in a gymnasium room under guard as officials probe dining hall riot that sparked the mass breakout. Board members and Supt Von Krog meet to review conditions.
The memorial illuminated fountain in Central Park ends its sixth season tonight as water and lights are turned off. Since Memorial Day it has run nightly, a park feature since Washington’s centennial celebration in 1939, with Albert Franzen operating it and Perry Jordan slated to dismantle and cap the fountain later this week.
Chaplain Donald Irwin, back from a year and a half in Europe, spoke at United Presbyterian Church urging religious devotion and a moral revival in postwar America. He linked God’s approval of the war to victory, warned of renewed war seeds in Europe, and urged realism tempered by a peaceful world vision. Members of nearby churches attended and Dr. George Kerpr presided at the service.
Allied reports say over a million Japanese troops from Bohin islands to New Guinea and Penang to Wake are capitulating or set to surrender. Only about 10 000 remain active in Burma near Shwegya, cut off from radio, raiding a village 35 miles north of Rangoon as Memorial Day approaches.
Washington county selective service board announces eight boys who turned 18 in August have registered for possible military service. General Tomoyuki Yamashita signs the surrender in Bilibid prison Manila after yielding to American and Allied forces. Lt. Gen. Jonathan Wainwright and Lt. Gen. A. E. Percival witness as Yamashita, once famed as the tiger of Malaya, joins 10,000 Japanese now behind bars.
Mrs Claribel Foss fractured her arm in a Sunday car crash near Salina Jefferson County. The vehicle, driven by her son D S Foss, was ditched.
Washington dispatch reports the War Department reduced the point discharge score to 80, enabling VE day to count toward releases. The change allows immediate release for those 85 and older with two years honorable service and expands eligibility for WAC personnel. The move aims to trim the army to 2.5 million by July 1 and continues as demobilization speeds depend on transport and space.
Capt. Walter R. Peck Jr. 24 of Sioux City identified as one pilot killed when an AT-6 trainer crashed nine miles southwest of Lockbourne Air Base. Peck served 30 B-17 missions over England and returned home April 19. he was the son of Maj. Gen. Walter R. Peck, former B-24 wing commander in England.
Mr. Foss reported avoiding a car in the middle of the highway causing damage to his vehicle estimated at about $50.
Myrna Reeves of Cedar Clippers and Lu Ella Sojka of Farmerettes were named champion home furnishing girls for the 1946 4-H project after a tour of rooms by the Girls' 4-H club committee. Each will receive 7.50 dollars, presented by I Rothschild. Lu Ella crafted most of her room including painting walls and furniture, dyeing curtains, making a bedspread and more.
August was warmer and drier than the prior year with 3.34 inches of rain versus 4.80 inches in 1944. Temperatures ranged from 50 to 98 degrees, with seven days above 90 and sixteen days above 80. No rain for 18 days except a trace last Friday. last month’s max 88 and min 62 on Saturday.
Funeral services for Fred Steck were held yesterday afternoon at the L A Jones funeral home with Rev Fred Putnam of Iowa City officiating. Burial followed in Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers listed: Howard McCleery, Will Harvood, Robert Patterson, Henry Berdo, Dr H C Hull, and Richard Stewart.
After World War I ended, county war casualty data show 60 dead as recorded by the selective service and Fred Downing. The list names Armworth Brighton Weinman Kalona and others among eligible counties, with veterans and widows cited as part of the tally.
General MacArthur's headquarters reports Allied forces expanding occupation in southern Honshu. The first wave includes 8th Army troops landing near Kanoya and Yokohama, with 13 000 cavalry and airlanding units arriving with few incidents. Tokyo Bay area airlift support continues.
