Rev. C. W. Fletcher, 69, vice president of the Iowa Baptist Assembly board and custodian of the assembly grounds, died after boarding a train in Des Moines to return home in Iowa Falls.
Thirty four Des Moines Ford dealers salesmen service and parts managers left Des Moines aboard a special train for San Diego California as guests of Ford Motor Co They were travelers in Iowa of a sales contest sponsored by the company More than 850 men from all parts of the nation were awarded trips to California.
Lawmen say three cattle rustling cases in Muscatine Louisa and Cedar counties may be linked. Albert Russell was arrested at his South Bend Indiana home on information from Louisa County Sheriff George Oakes. Nine cattle stolen from a Letts farm were being recovered as deputies questioned the suspect who reportedly confessed to thefts in Indiana.
About 800000 cans of white corn have been packed at the Dysart plant. Canning of white corn is underway. Most of the yellow corn has been packed and about 600 acres of replanted yellow corn remain to be put up.

Boneville Salt Flats Utah September 3 Sir Malcolm Campbell of England set a new unofficial automobile speed record of 299.874 miles an hour in a double run over the beach. The first run reached 304.311 miles an hour breaking the single run record. Bluebird’s second run totaled 295.566 miles an hour as a light wind reduced average speed below 300. Campbell hoped for another trial tomorrow.
Carl Jungbluth and family are expected to return tonight from a western trip, signaling a likely quiet evening at home after their travels.
Adjutant Jesse W. Radda announces a VFW picnic at Sunset park on Sunday September 8 with cooperation from the women’s auxiliary. The post invites all veterans and auxiliaries in the first and second districts to join in the event and a special program is planned. If weather prevents use of the park the gathering will move to the VFW rooms on the north side of the square.
OWA alumni will hold a luncheon at Congress Hotel on September 10 designated Iowa Football Day. Reservations due by September 4 to Henry Bailey or Lawrence Wilson. Plans include year activities, potential theater play, and banquet before the homecoming game.
Fan mail for the Washington radio program aired over WHO includes messages from Roanoke Virginia and Louisville Kentucky listeners. Letters praise performers such as Mr Knox and Maurice Mayo and recall connections to Washington Iowa and local families.
Dean Harland Mead of Washington junior college will attend a Des Moines conference of college heads tomorrow. The meeting will address student work programs funded by government aid and Mr Mead expects to learn more on his return about his institution’s evolving plan.
European statesmen gather in Geneva as the League of Nations council opens to address the Italian Ethiopian crisis. The 14 members consider Ethiopia's appeal of alleged Italian aggression and await a pivotal two week session influencing European and world peace.
Supt E A Ralston hosted twelve Washington teachers at a dinner yesterday evening at the YMCA. Milburn McKay, a ten year high school instructor, attended as a guest. Social time followed the meal with informal discussion on school affairs.
Gifford Roth of Wayland was seriously injured in a Saturday night automobile crash and is in a somewhat better general condition but remains unconscious.
The biggest dozen tomatoes in the state fair competition were shown by Mrs. Charles Anderson of southeast of Washington. She displayed the Washington county booth which placed 7th and her farm which placed 11th. The Anderson family thanked all who furnished Washington county farm products for the booth.
Edsall Brown and Matt joined by Kid sall chased thieves who had seized oil from Mart Whittaker at the M. L. Brown station. They halted the car after a chase and recovered a quart can with another oil can found later roadside.
Iowa relief officials completed an overnight conference to mobilize WPA funds. County representatives and Iowa Works Progress staff identified projects to employ about 45 000 in relief. WPA administrator L S Hill said many federal aid applications would come in, but more projects are needed before September 12 deadline.
Dr and Mrs W A Boice move their household goods and office fixtures from Cedar Falls to Washington Iowa for storage with Boice parents. They plan to depart for Boston for special study and then return to practice in Chicago.
City officials conducted routine business including approving monthly bills at yesterday's regular meeting. A special council session is scheduled for next Monday evening.
Isaac Ellis Green aged 93 died at 8 45 AM at his home 431 East Madison street after two years of decline. Funeral at 2 30 PM Friday at L A Jones funeral home with Rev A A Vinz. burial in Ainsworth cemetery. Born May 14 1842 in Kentucky he moved to Iowa in 1854 and to Washington county in 1890. Survived by four children H R Green Lindsay Montana Mrs William Mickle Alvo Neb Mrs R B White Crawfordsville and Allen Green St Paul. He was a longtime Baptist and member of the Journal's Three Quarter Century club.
Iowa officials discussed using liquor system profits to balance the 18 month period ending June 30, 1937. They proposed appropriating 190000 dollars monthly for 18 months from January 1926, with first year profits averaging near 100000 dollars monthly and higher returns anticipated as stores increase. The plan aims to cover missing appropriations and bolster working capital through 1935 37.
Riverside sept 3 work graveling highway No 22 east of Riverside to connect with the Lone Tree road was completed. The interstate construction company of Madison Wisconsin held the contract. 17500 tons were quarried from Edward Wingler farm. 140 cubic yards used at cemeteries, 65 cubic yards bought by the town for intersections.
The United Fruit liner Dixie ran aground on French reef during a hurricane and drifted off Cary’s Fort Reef. Limon and two other ships reached the stranded vessel, began rescue of 352 passengers and crew, with several crew and passengers reported slightly injured. Emergency radio messages enabled rescue efforts.
Washington's Chamber of Commerce plans a September dinner and meeting at the Congress hotel tomorrow at 6:30. E. A. Ralston, new superintendent of Washington schools, will discuss education's value to business and community relations. The gathering aims to introduce the new school head to local business men.
