An East-Side ad touts Karl's Clover Root Tea as a blood purifier curing constipation headaches nervousness and facial eruptions. It claims to make the head clear as a bell and lists Glasgow and Lytle as sellers.
Spectators packed the gates as Lady Nottingham and Chamois battled in a two horse free for all. Lady Nottingham won the opening heat in 2 13, a track record for a half mile, before succumbing to a leg injury. Chamois claimed the final heat and overall race victory.
A case before Squire Rogers against Joe Strabala for intoxication was dismissed after a hearing. A second similar charge against Strabala set for Monday, information filed by A J Friese. Another information filed against E Z Kolosick for assault and battery, alleged to have beaten W KE Kiehl. Kolosick resides in Jackson Township.
The dispatch reports Miss Margaret Craven daughter of Nettie Craven who is noted in the Mair estate suit quietly married in San Francisco to Henry Koehler a wealthy St. Louis brewer. The ceremony at First United Presbyterian was officiated by Rev M M Gibson with close friends present. The couple will honeymoon in Monterey after a wedding breakfast at the Cliff House.
Mrs. Brock of Minnonk Illinois Mrs. Frank Fordyce of Kaneona Illinois and Mrs. Thomas Hatton of Belle Plaine Illinois visited Mr. and Mrs R R Lane and returned home today. The former is the mother and the latter two sisters of Mrs Lane.
Special to The Journal reports a severe storm striking western Riverside town ship around sunset yesterday. Hail and high winds destroyed windows and chimneys, beat down trees and haystacks, killed poultry, damaged crops, and toppled the old church west of Riverside. Estimated local losses near $150 with broader county damages around $20,000 including Ainsworth and Crawfordsville areas.
At the county fair, St James church members ran a bazaar and served meals on the southwest corner of the square. The effort drew money from attendees including visitors from out of town and cleared a little over 200 for the church.
The notice schedules a quarterly meeting for Saturday evening and Sabbath. Sermons will be preached on Sabbath by Rev. J.C. W. Coxe and Saturday evening by Rev. J. B. Hardy of Brooklyn, Iowa.
Thos Perry of Jackson township reports a severe hail storm in the city with corn crops ruined and acres leveled. Horses badly cut, cattle injured, mills blown down or bent, and steel frames twisted. Homes require re shingling and most will need new window glass.
An advertisement asserts deafness stems from inflammation of the mucous lining of the Eustachian tube and offers Hall's Catarrh Cure as a cure. It promises one hundred dollars for any case of deafness caused by catarrh that cannot be cured and urges sending for circulars from K J Cheney Co of Toledo, Ohio. It also promotes Hall's Family Pills as the best.
