Iowa to switch drunken driving tests to breath samples
Iowa will drop blood tests for alcohol in drunken driving cases after January 1 and adopt breath testing. The plan funds a 50 50 state and federal program with tests analyzed by the State Hygienic Laboratory in Des Moines Iowa City and Sioux City. Officers will collect breath samples at arrests and mail them for analysis. A separate pilot uses closed circuit TV for driver license testing beginning January in Des Moines, costing 127000 funded by the federal government. The goal is to cut exam time and staff while improving driver training through instant feedback. The University of Iowa bureau will study results for fairness and effectiveness.
