Ulbricht Says West Berlin Harassment Could Trigger Conflict

East German leader Walter Ulbricht warned in a June 11 speech released today that opposing Soviet plans for Berlin could spark a conflict, as Red campaigners intensified pressure on land rail and air routes into the city. West Berlin airlift flights organized by Willy Brandt with Western backing continued to defy communist controls.

Fall Swim Schedule Opens Sept 13 at YWCA

The YWCA announces its fall swim schedule starting September 13 and running to November 18. Instructors listed are Mrs Harlan Neuhart Mrs Max Owens and Mrs Richard Schiebel with dipping sessions for adults and girls priced at 20 and 16 cents respectively.

Art Jones of Sigourney Dies at 78 in Sigourney Hospital

Art Jones 78, a former Washington resident and brother of L A Jones, died Thursday Sept 1 in Sigourney Hospital after a two month illness. Born Sept 6, 1881 in Jefferson County, he married Dolly Dunlap in 1908. they celebrated 50th anniversary in 1958. Funeral set for Saturday at Sigourney Presbyterian Church. Burial Pleasant Grove Cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Sigourney, in charge. Survivors include wife Dolly, sister Mrs J T Smith of Oskaloosa, brother Louie A Jones of Washington, and several nieces and nephews.

Retired Washington Native Operates Senior Citizens Services

Ruth J. Widmer of Denver runs a licensed agency from her home offering tasks for those aged 60 and over. The service includes bookkeeping lawn care reading aloud shopping and trips with about 42 clients aged 17 to 60. Widmer formerly edited Western Farm Life and taught home economics, saying she enjoys helping both clients and workers.

YW Workshop Slated In Fairfield September 15

The YWCA Fall Workshop for the southeast Iowa Town and Country YWCA will meet September 15 at the Turner Hotel in Fairfield. Mrs. Robert Day of Washington will lead the Southeast Workshop, with leaders drawn from White House Conference for Children and Youth attendees. Soil Bank Payments Set for October in Washington County

October 3 marks the start for annual Soil Bank Conservation Reserve payments in Washington County. ASC chairman Howard Lins said forms CSS-820 will be mailed in September. 44 CR contracts cover 3423 acres, with statewide totals of 7 726 contracts and 663 087 acres.

Humboldt Man Killed When Car Hits Roller

Ronald David Coleman, 20, of Livermore, died when his car struck the back of a pavement roller on U S 169 about 11 miles south of Humboldt. The roller operator escaped injury as Coleman died within minutes after the crash.

Riverside Residents Injured In Iowa City Crash

Seven Riverside residents were injured in a two car crash in Iowa City shortly after 1 30 am as they returned from a wedding dance. Two patients are hospitalized at Mercy Hospital including an expectant mother with multiple injuries.

Riverside Woman and Baby Hurt in Highway 218 Crash

A four week old baby and 41 year old Riverside woman, Mrs Orval Gerot, were listed in fair condition at University Hospital Iowa City after a two car crash on Highway 218 east of Riverside Thursday morning. The accident stemmed from a defective railroad crossing signal. Gerot's car hit the rear of Ottumwa salesman Carl Foster's vehicle though no train was near.

Lumumba's Opponent Arrested In Congo Political Crackdown

In Leopoldville premier Patrice Lumumba announced the arrest of Jean Bolikango and several followers on charges of seeking to form an independent state in Equatorial Province. Bolikango, a deputy and Party of National Unity leader, was taken to Leopoldville after arrest at Gemena.

Larry Drayfahl under goes leg amputations in Des Moines

Eighteen year old Larry Drayfahl son of Mr and Mrs William Drayfahl of Washington underwent surgery for the amputation of both legs between the ankle and knees at Iowa Methodist Hospital Des Moines after a severe electric shock while installing wires near Winterset on August 20 He suffered burns to his head and legs and remained in room 221 at the Des Moines hospital awaiting friends.

Keota Man William Miller Dies in Iowa City Hospital

William Miller 66 of rural Keota died Thursday morning Sept 1 at the Veterans Hospital Iowa City after two weeks as a patient. Funeral Sunday 2 30 p m at Keota Methodist with Rev David Van Wagner. burial Keota Cemetery with military rites. Powell Funeral Home in charge. Miller born June 17 1894 Emden Illinois married Armorelle McCreedy May 30 1920. Survived by wife three daughters ten grandchildren five brothers and five sisters. He was a WWI veteran and Keota American Legion member.
