A well dressed man entered a Cushing Oklahoma hardware store on Tuesday asked for pliers and used them to pull four teeth from his own mouth. He replaced the pliers and remarked the pain was killing him as staff and customers watched.
Senator McCarthy said a reluctant witness testified that the Army Signal Corps employed a security guard who favored Communist takeover. The guard, possibly still employed, had access to secret Army films and faced threats after testifying. Budenz, former Daily Worker editor, named a woman in the Quartermaster Corps as a Red who frequented Daily Worker offices with a party leader. South Carolina ratified the U S Constitution on May 23, 1788.
A four engine Air France Constellation struck Mount Comet in the French Alps near Barcelonnettle killing 42 people including violinist Jacques Thibaud and accompanist Rene Herbin. The Paris to Saigon flight was 90 minutes out of Paris when it crashed. Fire and a long rescue run followed with no survivors found.
In Panmunjom the Reds freed 300 prisoners today including 100 Americans from 23 states and said the slowdown will continue Thursday. Since Operation Big Switch began 29 days ago the Reds have delivered about 400 daily, with 2,400 from the Allies, while delaying others including Major General William F. Dean and several reactionaries.
Funeral services for Sallie Alice Taylor Norman will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Sherman’s Funeral Home with Dr. W. J. Stevens presiding and Elm Grove cemetery burial. Mrs. Norman, 604 North Avenue B, died Tuesday morning after a lingering illness. She was born August 9, 1869 in Princeton Missouri and married George Jerry Norman in 1897. Survivors include her son E. Norman of Ottumwa, grandchildren Dorothy Sayre and Donna Lou Norman, grandsons George R. Norman and Don C. Norman, a brother Hular Taylor, and several nieces and nephews.

Washington's Y-Teen club plans a Bunny Hop on Friday evening September 4 on the Lincoln school tennis courts. The event starts at 8 p.m. with admission 25 cents per person or 40 cents per couple for Washington high school students and recent graduates.
Salvation Army workers will be in Washington for one week starting Thursday to collect paper rags old clothing and other items. Cards are distributed at homes and residents asked to place items on the porch or curb the day after the truck stops. People needing a card or wishing the truck to stop should call 219.
Maurice Henry becomes owner of the Cities Service station at 502 West Madison after eight years under Myrl Leavitt. Henry, long time Washington resident and mechanic at John Deere, renames the outlet Henry's Cities Service and pledges focus on customer satisfaction and service.
Harold Moore begins as assistant manager at Wittmer's U Save after moving from Perry Iowa with wife Rosella and daughter Linda Rae. The family resides at 314 West Second Street and Linda Rae starts sixth grade this week.
A 55th General Assembly law requires 14 to 16 year olds to file an affidavit of necessity to obtain a school drivers license. The form must be signed by school officials and justify driving to school due to distance and lack of transit. A residence less than one mile creates prima facie denial, and licenses may be suspended after two traffic violations.
Members of Leon Beatty American Legion post joined national convention events in St. Louis with a large parade Tuesday. Attendees included Tommie Tucker Harold Jarvis Norman Schoonover Don Hazen Marty Whittaker Arnot Wylie Maynard Brown O J Brown Charles Denison and George Rudiger. The Iowa tall corn division was televised though local reception unclear. Don Radda crowned corn stalks near Washington.
The heat wave blamed for scores of deaths grips the eastern two thirds of the United States over nine days. Philadelphia reports 6.5 deaths, St Paul sees heat heart attacks, and Chicago sees curfews and park sleeping as drought bites the Midwest amid heat.
Washington Y's Men's club held its first meeting of the fall in the YMCA community room. Dave Elder editor of the Y's Men's World spoke on service opportunities and urged rededication to the movement's aims and YMCA service. Dr. G E Montgomery presided and announced committee plans and an October regional convention.
Three “hard core reactionaries” from Korea’s Freedom Village described a living hell under Communist captors. Cpl. Robert L. Shamwell of Louisville outlined prison terms, solitary confinement, confinement in a wooden box, long handcuff and chain time, days hung by arms, constant beating, and persistent neglect and lack of medical care. He called for harsher action against Communists.
Cpl Clarence J. Mitchell and Cpl Thomas J. Bean describe harsh discipline at Camp 1 after winter 1950 1951. Mitchell received 16 months with three months in handcuffs, Bean a year for trading a towel for candy. Shamwell details rope and cuff scars and a court that felt like a circus.
The special election to decide staggered four year terms for all elective municipal officials in Washington Iowa is set for September 11. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in the four wards. The question asks whether to change from two year terms to staggered four year terms.

Gen Jonathan M Wainwright 70 a Bataan Corregidor hero is in a coma at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. Fourth Army sources say the end seems near as his physicians report the condition growing worse. His son Jonathan M Wainwright Jr and his wife are at his bedside with a chaplain summoned to the hospital.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles told the American Legion's 35th national convention that Red China could send its army into Indochina if peace talks fail and warned of grave consequences beyond Indochina. The legion adopted a resolution urging all-out war with every usable weapon to unify Korea if negotiations stall.
West Chester officials report an unexpectedly large fourth and fifth grade enrollment. Carolyn Kempf of Wellmas will teach fourth grade, moving from a combined class with Marjorie Collett of Richland. To accommodate the split, the mental training class will relocate to the bus garage.
Funeral services for Tommy Dagle were held this afternoon at 1:30 in the Gould funeral home conducted by Rev. Oris Hutchinson pastor of the Friends church. Burial followed in the Methodist cemetery with American Legion rites observed.
Anna Harr of route two Riverside was taken to Jews City for treatment of a cracked vertebra after a highway accident on the Washington Riverside gravel road Tuesday at 8 15 p m. Her car went out of control and overturned in the Pitch after being struck by a car driven by Eileen JoAnn O Connor of Jowsa City. The Iowa City vehicle turned back and clipped Harr's rear fender sending her car into the ditch.
