OTTUMWA police sought thieves who robbed the First Methodist Episcopal church of silver cups and a pitcher used in communion services.
Opera film and radio star Nino Martini will inaugurate the State University of Iowa yearly concert series on October 26 in Iowa City officials said. He is slated to appear as the first artist in the university program.
New Hampton Florence Kearns Chickasaw county clerk reports 141 marriage licenses issued in August a 38 percent rise from August last year. The Little Brown Church in the Vale near Nashua draws most couples to the county.
Robert Rasmussen of Goldfield sold his grand champion 1050 pound baby beef at the Humboldt County fair to the Humboldt Co operative Creamery for 159.62 dollars. Thirty five beeves averaged 11.70 and totaled 3690 dollars. Three packing firms from Iowa and Minnesota and two livestock dealers were bidders.
Virgil Lekin of Sigourney was named deputy securities commissioner as James P. Meade resigned to take another state post. Lekin had worked in the securities department for three years and will fill the vacancy created by Meade's departure.
A gasoline soldering torch exploded at the Stokely Brothers canning plant in Muscatine injuring Clyde Gabriel Jr, Jacol Phillips, and Arthur Hill. All three suffered severe facial and body burns with Gabriel reported in critical condition.
Ernest Phipps a 35 year old farmer near Sioux Rapids was seriously injured when frightened horses pinned him between a barn and a wagon tongue his abdomen was pierced and he was taken to Spencer hospital for an operation when his condition permits
Donald Jones of near Newton watched a state fair rodeo and then tried calf riding in a farm lot. He was thrown from a calf and is hospitalized at Skiff Hospital with injuries. He is the son of Charles E. Jones.
Iowa legislator Dewey E. Goode chairs a committee seeking all license numbers withdrawn from counties and reissued to state departments. The interim panel also asks the motor vehicle department to identify individuals using vehicles with these numbers.
Mrs Wilfie Halsey, 45, of Waterloo was named for a license to wed William G Bowen, 80, of Waterloo, issued June 27 by Black Hawk county court clerk. A new license on Thursday permits her to wed Wesley R Helm, 58, Route 1, Waterloo, with Bowen’s license later noted as not used.
Ed Dugan 73 was showing new owner Mark Owens of Beaconsfield how to run the mill when his leg was caught in the blade. He was taken to Creaton Hospital in critical condition with severe injury.
Park board members oversee tree work in Central Park to remove dead limbs and dangerous branches and improve tree health and appearance. Merle Thompson of Davenport leads the operation with an assistant, noting a past major operation on the southeast locust tree. Other board members have overseen Sunset Park improvements this summer, including road surfacing and planned paving.
G A Al Goddard takes over the Washington Coast to Coast store with fourteen years retail and merchandis ing experience. The store will stay open through Saturday then close early next week for rearrangement with new merchandise arriving before a formal reopening. Goddard previously managed the Yankton South Dakota Coast to Coast store and worked seven years with J C Penney in Sioux Falls and Toledo. He is brother in law to D F Barnes. the Goddards live at 913 East Main Street with daughter Sharon.
Berlin reports Chancellor Adolf Hitler met with Konrad Henlein and rejected Czechoslovakia's three month truce proposal. Hitler outlined terms for a peaceful settlement of the Sudeten crisis during the talks.
Postmaster M. DeLong announced the courthouse will close for Labor Day next Monday with no mail deliveries. The window will open only from 8 to 10 AM for gate of stam es.
Mrs Oscar Georges received word that Charles Reynolds aged 35 died in Clamath Falls Oregon after an illness beginning August 22. An abdominal operation preceded death. He had lived in Canada and California before moving to Oregon. Burial will be in Saskatoon Saskatchewan. He leaves his mother wife one brother Harry and two sisters Vera and Hazel.
Leon Beatty post American Legion prepares a Labor Day schedule at Kendrick field with forenoon and afternoon events including bicycle and tractor races, horse pulling, airplane rides, pony and harness races, auto races for pre 1925 models, and a downtown concert. Admission 25 cents adults 10 cents children with officials listing judges, starters, and prize money totaling 100 dollars. Washington Concert Band performs at field and downtown, then a water fight by fire department and a Rendezvous dance. Red Cross and medical staff planned on site.
Federal and county officers from three counties sealed a 50 mile radius around Yuba City to capture two youths who abducted Mrs. William R. Meeks 55 wife of a rancher. The suspects demanded 15000 and fled in her car found burned in Maryville. National Guard units joined the manhunt as investigators stated escape was unlikely.
Legion members urge public cooperation to prevent automobile and horse racing accidents during the Labor Day program. State patrols will man the highway between town and Kendrick field on road No. 1. Special police will patrol the field and a Red Cross tent with a doctor and nurse will be on site.
Divorce cases listed include Jennie Rath Allen against Dudley Allen of Riverside and C. Pearson of Ainsworth against Bertha Pearson, filed for the district court September term.

President Roosevelt urged a distinct liberal conservative divide and backed political liberals regardless of party. He said he would support a good liberal running on the Republican ticket if the country’s interests require it, stressing the good of the country above party.
Washington junior college reports 42 students registered on the first day, with Dean Harland Mead noting the strong start and a likely enrollment rise over last year. He said many registered from Wayland Brighton Lone Tree West Chester Pleasant Plain Ainsworth Kalong and from Washington. One Kentucky high school graduate is among enrollees.
Judge James P. Gaffney Democrat candidate for Congress from Iowa first district issues a letter to Don McGiffin of the Fairfield Daily Ledger. He denies claiming opposition to the New Deal and says he supports its major efforts with caveats. Gaffney vows independent voting and notes personal support for Wearin in the pre primary. He also cites uncertainty about Congressman Richer campaigning in the fall.
