Chariton area efforts aim to raise 1500 dollars for the American Legion junior band to attend the annual convention in Newark, New York. About 600 dollars has been collected so far, with nearly 300 dollars contributed by the band members' parents.
Ottumwa IA Herman Moschel general manager of Dain Manufacturing Co announces a $70,000 expansion to the farm implement plant. Six one story additions will add 57,000 square feet to the existing 262,000, with 450 workers kept on. No hires planned. space to ease crowding and permit growth.
A downtown blaze in Iowa City caused about 15000 in damage to two stores after a fault in wiring at Reliable Electric shop. Fireman Louis Willhauer was overcome by smoke and taken to Mercy Hospital with non serious injuries. The fire spread to Harmony Hall and damaged Smith's case.
Arthur Katzenstein age 14 drowns while wading with brothers Frankie 11 and Tommy 8 in the Missouri River at Council Bluffs. The youths tried to reach him as he slipped into a deep hole but could not save him. Arthur could swim only a little, according to the brothers.
Fort Madison will make lip reading a permanent school course in the coming year. Last year it was offered only on certain days as an experiment. Miss Anne Purdy of Buffalo New York will come to teach the course. Fort Madison High School is among four schools in the state offering this program to students who are hard of hearing.
H H W Ayers from Tipton Iowa, sentenced for 30 years for assault with intent to murder, escaped a state prison farm while doing plumbing and is believed to have fled into a corn field. His home is in Iowa City.
The Daughters of Union Veterans present a four by six foot wool bunting flag for Central Park to fly on patriotic days. The city park board gratefully accepts. The Municipal Band plans a Civil War themed program on Saturday night with Don Bouer as soloist and John Muth leading a salute.
Mrs. Mary Emma Reeves 83 widow of William Reeves died at home after a long illness. Funeral services are set for Saturday at 2 PM at L. A. Jones funeral home. She was born in 1854 in Washington county to Silas and Louisa Dawson and leaves three daughters Daisy Van Sant Maude Anderson and Anna Hamilton and 24 grandchildren.
A thermometer showed 96 degrees this afternoon at one o clock marking the peak of today’s heat. Officials warned residents to stay indoors during peak sun hours and to drink water.
London dated September 2 reports Britain will bolster Mediterranean naval forces after a phantom submarine sank the tanker Woodford off Spain, killing one officer and injuring six. Earlier the destroyer Havock was attacked in the same area. cabinet action calls for more destroyers to the western Mediterranean.

Martin Stewart 89 died this morning at the Masonic home in Bettendorf after a long illness. Born March 11 1848 in Dayburn county Indiana he lived in Ainsworth most of his life and never married. A longtime Masonic member and Memorial day flag bearer known as Uncle Matt his body to be taken to L A Jones funeral home in Washington with funeral plans pending.
The Burlington Zephyr arrived at Union Station Denver this morning bearing an iron lung for Shirley Krause a two and a half year old girl suffering from infantile paralysis She was placed in the device immediately upon arrival and care began at once
Joseph Jacobs was sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal woodland murder of Evelyn Mack ten years old daughter of his best friend in Detroit on September 2.
Congressman C. Eicher outlined provisions of a pending farm bill at the Dutch Creek homecoming picnic. He said a special congressional session is likely to act on farm legislation and stressed surplus control over production subsidies to stabilize prices without federal outlays.

A bus tire blowout on the Baltimore Pike near Washington D C caused a crash with a private car, killing three members of a family and a fourth person. The incident occurred today as the vehicles collided on the highway.
Mrs Elizabeth Maas of Keokuk died when the car she rode in collided head on with another vehicle driven by D Isenberg near Taylor Missouri. Her husband Wal Maas was seriously injured.

In a justice court session Justices J E Bovee sentenced Merie Walker 26 and Clifford Taylor 18 to ten days in the county jail after pleading guilty to petty larceny. They admitted stealing two automobile tires from Sam Harrison of north of Haskins.
Carl Meredith and Bertha Oatman, both of Roseville Illinois, obtained a marriage license here yesterday afternoon. The license shows Illinois residents used Iowa to escape a new marriage law recently enacted in Illinois.
A Keeley Institute report shows American beer drinkers used about 73.95 million gallons of alcohol in 1986, versus 45.45 million gallons from distilled spirits. It notes beer averages 4.25 percent alcohol, while spirits average 45 percent, and that a 12 ounce beer contains more alcohol than a one ounce 90 proof whiskey.
