Chicago September 2. In a brief court appearance the wife of I Duke, noted tobacco magnate, was declared insane and ordered held for examination. The case centers on her condition and the state of her mental health as presented to Judge Grimmell.
On April 21 1908 the expedition reached latitude 90 degrees and sighted the pole. The party hoisted a flag amid extreme cold minus 38 C and began the long return to civilization via Copenhagen.
Pittsburg on September 2 reports a settlement between miners and operators affecting 18000 workers, with 7000 on strike for over a week. National President Thomas L. Lewis announced. A posted notice will rescind the coal companies order requiring safety powder in mining for the present.

Mason City Iowa September 2. M Doyle shot E R Lockwood through the hand with a revolver at Clear Lake after catching him with Doyle's wife. In the struggle Lockwood grabbed the gun and Doyle fired. Both men are prominent residents and were arrested.
William Fall land died southwest of Holmes after falling thirty feet from the hay carrier slats in a barn. He rode the slats into the barn, passed through a door, then fell when the slats broke while he was suspended from the carrier track. He worked for Thomas Wheelan at the time of the accident.
Samuel Gompers, AFL president, denounced strike breaking and long distance worker migration during depressions. He urged an international federation of labor though US unions are not affiliated with European groups. A British resolution on the same subject was adopted as the conference adjourned to Budapest.
New York dealers in Maiden Lane expect a 10 percent rise in the retail price of cut diamonds soon. The move follows an announced advance of from to 10 per cent, with dealers signaling an early date for the price increase.

A 25 year old man, C D Townsend, killed himself with strychnine at the Metropolitan hotel in Council Bluffs, Iowa, after leaving a note blaming brutal contractors and labor conditions. He was alone after others were told to let him rest, and a vial and letters were found on him. Townsend asked not to be helped as he faced a personal crisis. Reports from Council Bluffs Iowa September 2 say two Mineola bank robbery suspects are in hiding near a haystack a mile from Henderson. A farmer alerted authorities who formed a posse and pursued the men toward the nearby river, with the bandits believed fairly surrounded. The description matches the Mineola gang in build and clothing.
Pittsburg September 2 A new victory for the Schoenyi strikers as members of the Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen on the Pittsburg Fort Wayne and Chicago railroad refused to transport additional strikebreakers to the Steel Car company plant.
Eight men killed in a Saarbruecken coal pit disaster in Germany on September 2. The accident occurred at the mine with workers trapped underground and emergency teams responding swiftly.
