In Memphis, Bob Massey recovering from surgery answered reporters by opening his coat to show a transparent plastic window sewn into his shirt by his wife. The device allows people to look through without Massey removing clothing.
Americans returning to freedom accuse Communist forces of holding at least 60 men in Kaesong barbed wire cages as hostages for 14 Reds from the Rose Island riots. The UN pledged to return all prisoners under Operation Big Switch, with a daily quota adjusted without explanation as releases continued.
Army sergeant Set Aubrey E Miles, 45, of Brooklyn, returned to American hands in Berlin after eight months in Soviet captivity. Miles said he wandered into East Germany at Fulda, was captured, and forced to labor in Bautzen factories, even working as a butcher, before escaping to West Berlin last week and reporting to U S Army officials.
Secretary of State John Foster Dulles urged a meeting of states that fought in Korea to pick a site for the next month’s peace conference. Allies seek a venue while Communists have not agreed to UN GA decisions on conference form. Site options include Geneva Colombo and San Francisco with Sino tension potential.
Announcement reports ownership change at Washington radio and appliance store. Wayne Tait transfers management to Bernard Payne who combines repair, radio and TV sales in a new Payne's Radio and Appliance location on North Iowa Avenue. An open house is planned. Payne will repair Maytag appliances.
Mrs. George J. Norman died at 10 30 a m today after a lingering illness. The body was taken to Sherman s funeral home where funeral arrangements are pending awaiting arrival of relatives.
Funeral services for John Edward Burkholder 17 will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Wellman Mennonite church. The Wellman youth was killed in an automobile accident south of Wellman early Monday morning. Burial will be in West Union cemetery. Pastors George Miller and Max Yoder will officiate.
DES MOINES Iowa farmers and families were honored as the Iowa State Fair opened its third day with a sunbaked crowd over 200000. Judges tested prize livestock including Shorthorn Jersey Milking Shorthorn cattle Chester White swine and several sheep breeds as 4 H livestock judging began. State officials lawmakers and former governors planned to visit on State Day with eight harness and four running races scheduled before the grandstand. Attendance reached 192006 over three days buoyed by preparations despite heat with temperatures near 96.

Artemas Brown named president of the Washington Municipal band at a Legion rooms meeting. New officers include Terry Mathers vice president Eddie Winga secretary Don Radda treasurer and board members Gene Thomas Jim Birney Milo Steele Jr Max Lee and Skeets Everetts. Melvin Hill elected director for another season and provided refreshments. A band picnic is set for Wednesday September 9 at the Steele cabin with attendees meeting at city hall at 6 p.m. Band practice resumes next March.

Yugoslavia protested to Italy over armed demonstrations near the frontier and threatened to appeal to an international body. The note, released by Tanjug, cited strong Italian forces near the border and fears of a move on the Trieste zone.

Des Moines - Farm Bureau President Howard Hill said prolonged drought has cut Iowa corn production by 12 to 15 percent. He warned even a two inch rain would not help much and noted a predicted 660,720,000 bushel crop. Hill may ask Agriculture Secretary Benson to consider quotas before allotments.
Opening day enrollment in Washington public schools stood at 1 215 pupils led by 400 in the high school and 672 at Lincoln and Stewart grade schools. Freshmen numbered 110 with 101 sophomores 102 juniors and 87 seniors. Heat prompted early dismissal at 2 30 p m with possible continuation if the heat wave lasts.

Senator William E Jenner accused the United Nations of coddling communism after the UN tribunal reversed a dismissal of 12 American employees. He warned that continued communist influence could threaten U.S. security and urged Congress to cut funding or consider forming a new international body.
Maxine Miller, 39, of Olds, admitted to University hospital as polio patient. She is among seven admitted since August 28, with condition listed as fair. The latest report shows 27 active cases at University hospital and 16 in active.
United Press reports ninth straight day of extreme heat across Iowa with most readings near 100 degrees. Schools cut opening day schedules. corn crops suffer while pools stay busy as forecasts show little relief through Wednesday and only sparse chances of scattered showers on the northern edge of the state.
