Hurley leaders and local businessmen back a plan to create a municipal project linking the town to a broader economic channel over the next decade. Officials discuss formation steps and potential city ordinance to regulate band music and horn usage if the proposal advances.
Dr L A Nowlin of Decatur will assume Dr Steninger’s practice at West Chester beginning today. Steninger has practiced in West Chester and will be succeeded by Hun in Wellman. Nowlin recently returned from Hinds where he studied women and children. He is located in the Guson building and will conduct a general practice with a strong record.
Entries of horses and jockeys for the fall festival races are arriving. Submit entries to Henry Bailey by noon Saturday September 13. A new event titled the last horse finish will have jockeys ride others’ mounts. Prizes are 20, 10, and 5 dollars. All entries must be Washington county owned and 30 days in county. Charles Brown and Albert Donan assist the committee in planning.
Washington public schools opened for the new year with higher expected enrollment. At the high school today 460 students were registered divided into four classes. principal Della Patton announced the totals and teachers prepared morning assemblies, with more enrollees anticipated this week.
Last evening at 6 15 young people of the county gathered at the Methodist church in Washington for an Echo meeting. Verna Pasquer presided and led several songs. A violin solo by Miss Margarita Willa Shieh drew special praise. Secretary Leigh Soule spoke on four square meetings as part of the youth group activities. Raymond Witteig and Clyde Witrown, mentors and leaders, also addressed the gathering.
Robert Lyle McGugin age 80 plus, a pioneer Hook Island railway employee, died at his home 328 East Main Street. Funeral Wednesday at Presbyterian church with Pastor Dr. Eastwood. Born August 28, 1850 in Washington County Pennsylvania, he worked on Rock Island and Missouri division railways before retirement, last of his family line in the area and longtime community figure.

Mrs. Cartier of Reinbeck Iowa a 19 year old resident died this morning after a brief illness at Washington County Hospital. The body was taken to Sherman funeral home and will be conveyed to Reinbeck for funeral services and burial likely Wednesday. She was born November 1910 at Reinbeck daughter of W B Redfern and Kate Dond Redfern and was married two years ago to Carl Bern.
Tromsoe reports say the whaler Trattvaag brought back the bodies of Solomon Auguste Andree and his two companions after 33 years missing in the Arctic. The crew found skeletal remains and noted some heads were missing. The vessels intended to dock at Skjeivoey before arriving at Tromsoe around 10 p.m. local time.
Funeral services for Miss Flora F. Taylor were held at She ion parlors with Rev. Malcolm of the Associate Presbyterian church officiating. Burial followed at Elm Grove cemetery. She died Saturday evening at her sister Mrs. Alice Cherry’s home in Des Moines. Miss Taylor, a seamstress by trade, lived at 210 South Marton avenue for 28 years. She was survived by one sister, Mrs. Cherry, and three brothers predeceased her. A Texas Special train on the St Louis San Francisco line left rails near Osage Hills Missouri killing eight and injuring many as rocks from a quarry blocked the right of way. The derailment involved baggage, combination and chair cars with several unidentified dead among passengers and crew. Police and railroad officials investigated the rock obstruction while rescuers worked at the scene.

A Washington man was hurt yesterday evening in a mobile collision near Katona when his car collided with a Whippet driven by another man. His injuries are not considered dangerous though the Katona car was partly burned and its occupants injured.
Dieudomme Coste and Maurice Bellont departed Le Bourget for New York at 120 mph amid promising weather after a prior failed Atlantic attempt. Radio reports indicated no precise position of the Question Mark as vessels tracked the flight. A large crowd gathered at Cariss Wright Airport for the annual national air races and the run of the speed class trophy.
Mace becomes sole owner of the Washington Motor company by purchasing the interest of Dr. Wilton McCarthy of Denver. The business, a long time Ford dealer and service center, will be renamed the Mace Motor company while keeping its policy and staff. John Harbaugh and family visit relatives in the area. Mary Eisele and her parents stay in town for vacation and business.
