Fort Dodge Iowa column reports death of Michael F Sullivan a 54 year old Webster County farmer at Mercy hospital after a team of horses bolted knocked him down while he was hauling corn to an elevator he was trying to calm the animals when injuries proved fatal.
Mrs. Ida B. Wise Smith president of the National W C T U says national prohibition will follow military conscription as World War I era temperance policy. She spoke during the sixty eighth annual Iowa W C T U convention in Knoxville.
Lieut. Col. Robert J. Shaw of Sigourney, state commander of the American Legion, has been recalled to active duty by the War Department. He attended the fifth district conference here Wednesday and is ordered to report for a physical examination in Omaha, Nebraska, today and begin service Friday. Shaw will serve as an officer in Des Moines while remaining Iowa commander of the Legion.
Garland Gaines 30, Atlantic trucker, is charged with manslaughter in the death of Leona Ackerman 42. Ackerman died Saturday morning from broken ribs and a punctured lung after allegedly being kicked from a truck in front of her home. A coroner's jury tied the fatal injuries to the incident.
Leon Johhn Newton 70 of Davis City Iowa was held up robbed and shot a mile south of Leon by a transient Tuesday evening. A youth signaled with an inner tube on Highway 69 Newton pulled over and followed a back road shortcut to Leon. The youth forced Newton to reveal money and firearms then shot twice one bullet hit Newton’s right foot and a second went wild. The assailant fled.
Mrs. Alice Cherry aged 85, longtime resident of this county, died Oct. 31 1940 shortly after noon. Born Oct. 12 1855 in Theria Morrow County Ohio she lived in Indianola and Washington county most of her life. Survived by daughter Lulu B and son Albert she was a member of the Associate Presbyterian Church. Funeral services are set for 2:30 PM Saturday at Sherman's Funeral Home conducted by Rev. A. M. Malcolm of Albia.

Washington plans eight special police on duty tonight as a precaution after recent Halloween mischief. Chief Jay Brown said the move aims to curb youth mischief and maintain order during the evening.
Anamosa resident Horace Soper aged 89 went collegiate for two days wearing a green sport shirt and carrying a small women's umbrella as part of a wager.

Italy reported progress on its invasion of Greece with troops advancing into Greece despite Greek air and possibly British counterattacks. Mrs Humeston of Albia shows a badge worn by her grandfather at the 1872 convention that nominated Ulysses S Grant for president. The badge was displayed at the Republican national convention in Philadelphia this year.
