Secretary Mellon presented a complete tax reduction scheme to the House Ways and Means Committee aiming to absorb the government surplus. Five major cuts would be enacted including corporate rate drop from 13 to 12 percent and a repeal of the estate tax, keeping all other taxes intact.
Dr W C Williamson of Monmouth, veteran pastor and Civil War soldier now in his 80s, spoke at the United Presbyterian church in Washington on a sermon about Gods love in Christ. The communion was observed after preparatory services, with the largest audience in the churchs history and several new members joining.
Fairfield defeated Washington 26 to 0 as Washington showed listless play with three regulars missing. Captain Bill Bales and Bill Atkinson starred for Washington but the team failed to match Fairfield's intensity. Fairfield added three touchdowns and won with 12 first downs to Washington's six. Washington plans a shakeup and prepares for Wellman after Armistice day.
About eighty boys of the YMCA attended a Hallowe'en picnic Saturday evening west of town. Activities included a treasure hunt, ghost stories and other games followed by a supper of pumpkin pie cinnamon rolls and apples. The event was organized by the YMCA boys council.
Col Charles A Lindbergh is retained by the Guggenheim fund for the promotion of aeronautics in a consulting capacity. He will not join any commercial venture and may conduct flights or other experiments at his own initiative to advance aviation. Headquarters are in New York.
Cedar Rapids police pursue 33 year old Carl Happel after an alleged fatal wounding of his sweetheart Mrs Lita Layer in Missouri. Happel reportedly fled in a seized car driven by Marvin Gard with Gard coerced into aiding the escape. Layer, mother of three, was critically wounded and a divorce case is pending.
Pupils in Washington schools will attend only three days this week including today and tomorrow and Wednesday. Schools dismiss Thursday and Friday for instructors to attend the state teachers convention in Des Moines. Local teachers will mostly attend, likely leaving Wednesday evening and returning Saturday.
Muscatine defeated Columbus Junction 12 to 6 as McIntyre scored both touchdowns. Burlington beat North Per Moines 18 to 6 after recovering a fumbled pass. West Chester won 14 to 0 at West Chester against Wellman.
In one Chinese city owning a car is costly with a monthly license fee of 37.50 dollars and gasoline priced at 1.50 dollars per gallon when cheap, highlighting the burden of urban motoring.
Storm toll in the British Isles rose to 61 with Irish reports adding 37 deaths. In Galway and Mayo coast areas 16 fishermen drowned at Cleggan bay, six bodies and three cats were found ashore, and Enishkea Island near Achill saw twelve men lost. Lakan bay near Killala saw nine dead as two boats with eight crew perished. seven men survived.
A Davenport ruling found Bob Kolosick of Washington high School ineligible this semester, forcing forfeiture of all games won with him in the lineup. Superintendent Peet will notify Otumwa Williamsburg Muscatine and West Chester of the error and the forfeits.
The government plans a new indictment of Thomas H Read Elbert A Read and Henry Read former bank officers from the Read family on charges dismissed in federal court Judge Thomas Munger will seek the case at the November Des Moines grand jury Henry Read on trial admitted making bank reports for April 6 and June 20 1925 using figures from the daily balance book.
In Washington Oct 31 the government argues the Continental Trading company was a shell created by Harry Sinclair for a Teapot Dome linked deal. Prosecutor Owen J Roberts says Continental funded bonds to Albert Fall and that Sinclair was deeply involved, despite defense claims of no direct connection. The judge indicated the evidence should be heard in court.
Ora Wasson of Wellman, 38, was bound over to the grand jury on assault with intent to commit rape after a preliminary hearing. The alleged incident occurred when he entered a woman's room and tried to assault her. she escaped, and Wasson was later found at his brother’s home. The victim suffered bruises but no serious injuries, and questions about Wasson’s mental responsibility were raised. He remains jailed unless bonds are posted. A sanity hearing may follow.
Mrs. A G Schmidt of 1145 Corse street Burlington is hospitalized with injuries from a Sunday evening crash south of the creek bridge north of Ainsworth. Her husband and son were returning from Town City when the Ford hit a Chevrolet carrying two Keosauqua men. The Schmidt party were treated first at Ainsworth and then at Washington county hospital. The other occupants sustained only minor injuries.
Government claims the Reads seized bank bonds and used them as assets to borrow 68,050 dollars in a Liberty Bond deal. The allegations hinge on the use of bonds belonging to the bank as collateral and assets in the borrowing transaction.
In Algona Iowa Saturday three banks failed, carrying deposits over 4 million dollars. Kossuth county state bank in Algona, Swea City state bank, and two others faced closure, with bank examiners arranging reorganizations and 35 percent waivers for depositors.
Rev W G Barr of Crawfordsville was chosen president of the Washington county ministerial association at the annual Y M C A meeting. Dr W W Bowers of the Washington Methodist church was elected vice president and Rev A A Wing of the Washington Baptist church was named secretary and treasurer. No formal program was held as pastors discussed various matters and will draft a schedule for the coming year.
Berlin born Isidor Witkowski founded the Die Zukunft weekly and warned Germany of war with England. He predicted the United States would not ally with Germany and later became a pacifist after the Marne, facing suppression and threats during World War I. Harden died at 66 in Montanaver-Mhala, Switzerland.
