General Leonard Wood struggles to quell Cuban faction fights in Manzanillo as two main groups led by Generals Rabi and Rios demand control of offices including mayor, custom house, and police posts. Wood placates one side with limited appointments while facing resistance and threats of disbanding the insurgent army. Also reports U S Army hospital ship Missouri carrying 271 sick or wounded from Porto Rico with many Third Illinois soldiers aboard.
Maj. W.T. Comegys told war investigators there was no delay in filling requisitions and he met all needs at Camp Thomas. Lt. Arrasmith criticized camp sinks and lax discipline. Drs. Baxter and Boyd testified on Sgt. Frank’s death after a railroad accident and removal to Chickamauga Park. Residents described camp conditions and blamed volunteer habits for sickness. Wisconsin sick sent home without proper care.
