City officials designate Halloween Saturday October 31 as Trick or Treat night urging cooperation for a safe one night outing. Mayor Harold Johnson and Police Chief Kenneth Bauer urge drivers to exercise extra caution due to more youngsters on the streets and residents to illuminate porches to light the way.
The Keota swine flu vaccination event moved to November 2 from 1 to 8 p.m. at Keota Elementary School. The change affects all residents seeking the H1N1 vaccine at the local site.
Gaylen Bryce Bartholomew of Washington lost control of his vehicle on county road 631 one mile west of Washington. The car left the roadway and struck a telephone pole, demolishing the vehicle. Sheriff’s officers said charges are pending.
Four quad city hunters were released by Washington County authorities after posting bond on illegal hunting charges. Willie Nance of Rock Island faced licenses and three rabbits, Wilburt Burrage of Davenport hunted quail and pheasants out of season, Otha Hickman of Rock Island had no license with three rabbits and one quail, and John H. Greer of Rock Island was charged with no license and two rabbits.
Anthony Butler, 20, of Mason Tennessee, was arrested in Kankakee Illinois on assault charges after punching a costumed werewolf performer from the Kankakee Jaycees at a Halloween haunted house. The performer, unnamed, did not need hospital care and the event drew scores of children.
Rain likely today and tonight with high near 52 and low around 36. Partly cloudy Sunday with a high in the mid to upper 40s. Winds from the south 5 to 15 mph today, then north 10 to 15 mph tonight. Measurable rain probability near 100 percent today, dropping to about 20 percent late tonight.
UPI reports Senator Hubert H. Humphrey of Minnesota was discharged from Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center after bladder cancer surgery. He plans to stay at his Washington home until Election Day and may return for another chemotherapy session. He expects to serve a full six year Senate term if re elected and praised Carter Mondale.
Albert Spaggiari, once linked to an underground army, confessed to planning the Nice bank heist to fund an underground right wing group called la Catena. The 10 million dollar theft involved a tunnel from a sewerside site, robbery of cash gold and jewels, and a wide dragnet arrest of 22 suspects. Spaggiari’s ties include the OAS and a life of radical action amid French Algeria politics.
An attorney charged with eight counts of Iowa income tax evasion last October 18 demanded explicit details about the charges. The defense filed a motion for a bill of particulars asking the state to reveal how cases are selected for prosecution and how Griffiths’ case came to attention, with further requests for prosecution criteria and official names. The judge set two weeks for written arguments and did not indicate a ruling date.
Iowa DOT discussions across five cities review snow and ice removal on priority routes. Officials plan to cut fleets, shift to larger trucks, and reduce salt use while preserving safety and addressing terrain and traffic differences.
United Press International reports Ford and Carter concentrate on big states in final weekend. They tour Texas Pennsylvania New York for Ford and Missouri Louisiana Texas for Carter aided by polls showing near equal popular totals. A key electoral vote map favors certain states while last minute moves and a dispute over McCarthy’s ballot status color the closing days.
Almost 9,000 Washington County residents are registered to vote in next Tuesday's general election. In 1972 the county cast 8,089 votes and in 1974, 5,500, an off year. Polls open 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. A list of 22 precinct polling places is provided including Brighton K P Hall and Kalona Community Building.
President Ford personally approved the sale of a sophisticated computer system to China after being assured it had no military use, and similarly approved a sale to the Soviet Union. An interagency review opposed by ERDA and some Pentagon officials ultimately supported the sale with safeguards, following State and Defense Department recommendations. James Bowe of Control Data Corp noted broad sales, while noting some civilian and nuclear research uses and urging caution.
Hardin County Sheriff Robert Callaway has begun consulting a middle aged clairvoyant from another state in the Sept. 5 death of Arlene Gehrke, 58. A spent projectile found near a barn south of Iowa Falls is being evaluated for links to the parish organist’s killing, with no new suspects or leads yet.
A wintry storm left eight to 10 inches of snow on parts of the southwestern Texas plains with Lubbock setting a record at seven and a half inches early in the season. Rain spread across the Plains to Dixie, with heavy rains and gusty winds in Louisiana and gales along the coast. Early temperatures ranged from 11 degrees in Craig Colorado to 76 in Fort Lauderdale Florida.
Washington County Sheriff Yale H. Jarvis, 32, faces no opposition in the November 2 general election after a decisive primary victory 1511 to 806 over Robert L. Swift. Appointed October 1 1975 to finish Don Robertson’s term, Jarvis highlights “new professionalism” and improved county-wide law enforcement, aims for closer work with prosecutors, and notes frustrations and rewards of the job. He and his wife Connie reside at 806 S Marion Ave with two young daughters.
