Fighting Near Panmunjom Inches From Truce Camp

UN forces fought within a mile of Panmunjom as operations pressed on around the truce village. Tank and infantry units moved along Kumsong and Chosori while western front advances near Yonchon and constant artillery struck hills. Both sides patrol the Panmunjom corridor, while UN troops repelled counterattacks and pressed toward the Punchbowl area.

Charlies Weber Chooses Two Plots For Plums

Charlies Weber of Ainsworth opts to grow two crops of plums rather than join the two crop plan for apples and flowers. A peach plum tree in Weber's yard bore a generous crop earlier this season, shed its leaves, then leafed out again and began blooming as many small plums form this week.

Cloudy this afternoon and tonight with colder air moving in from the west. Highs range from 4 to 50 in the northwest to 60 to 74 in the southeast with winds shifting from south to southwest to north-northwest. Lows tonight 25 to 28 northwest and 35 to 80 southeast. Wednesday clears and turns colder with highs 35 to 40 northwest and 40 to 45 southeast.

Mrs Lucy Dautremont Dies at 73 in Riverside

Mrs Lucy Agnes Dautremont 73 of Riverside died today at Mercy hospital Iowa City after brief illness. Funeral set for Saturday at 6 am in St Marys church with burial at St Vincent's cemetery. Survived by 16 children, nine daughters, seven sons, 15 grandchildren, two sisters and four brothers.

Funeral services were held at 2 PM Monday in the Baptist church with Rev E C Longfellow and Rev Hillis officiating. Burial followed in Keota cemetery. Mrs Paul Thayer served as soloist. Pallbearers were FE C C Smith, C V Brown, Elwin Lewis, Robert Grimes, S W Kaster and John Beenblossom.

Fourteen Die In Harbor Blast In Buffalo Harbor

In Buffalo New York authorities report fourteen men dead or missing after a barge loaded with 8.5 million gallons of gasoline collided with the lake freighter Penobscot and exploded near the harbor breakwater. Thirteen injured, nine rescued unharmed. Captain Louis Dyette of the Penobscot helped save twenty aboard his ship by backing into the breakwater and guiding crew to safety.

Volunteers Arm Themselves For Egypt Liberation

Cairo reports say numerous volunteer battalions have formed nationwide under the Moslem Brotherhood to fight British rule. Interior Minister Fuad Shaq al-Din notes the government knows of the movement but will not act while laws hold. arms are reportedly bought on the black market. He says Egypt will act openly if needed, and reports claim no British casualties since the 1936 treaty was scrapped.

Mrs. George Yoder Dies in Oregon at 85

Mary E. Hochstetler Yoder died Monday in Oregon City after a lingering illness. Born near Kalona in 1866 she lived in Maxwell before marrying George Yoder in 1888. Funeral Friday at Kalona Christian Church with Rev. Milton Hollingshead officiating. burial in Sharon Hill Cemetery. She is survived by a sister, two brothers, and many nieces and nephews.

Aerial nuclear blast ten times brighter than the baby bomb lit the Nevada sky at 9 01 a m. The third test in the second series at Frenchman Flat produced a large mushroom cloud within a minute rising to 40000 feet. Observers in Las Vegas saw a brief sun blackout but heard no thunderous roar. The blast suggests progress toward a tactical weapon for troop support without harming U S forces.

City Halloween Party Plans Set for Wednesday

Plans for the annual city wide Halloween party for children are completed. Festivities begin at 6 PM with a costume parade around the square, hosted by the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Participants through eighth grade should be at the YMCA by 6. The parade moves at 6 30. Prizes include three first place awards and 10 additional $1 prizes for costumes. Younger children attend a party at the YMCA Community room and depart by about 8 30. Older youths enter the YMCA at 7 30 for a gym party via the alley door.

Second Man Dies Of Gun Battle Wounds

DES MOINES UP Bert Lee Thomas 51 died of critical gunshot wounds after a companion used him as a shield in a gun battle with police in an apartment. Orphus Wasson 71 died earlier in the shootout when police returned fire as they confronted the men firing through walls during alleged target practice.

John W. Gibson of the United States displaced persons commission says Soviet Russia has expelled 10 million from eastern Europe, with 1.2 million displaced by German action.
