With just over $20,000 reported at headquarters today the 1951 Community Chest campaign faces a tight path to its $25,000 goal. Officials urge workers to complete canvassing and turn in reports to the YMCA and conduct a cleanup to ensure every resident is contacted.
Sixteen persons were fined in city police court in October per city hall records. Most fines were for traffic violations with two for intoxication and one for disrespect to an officer on duty. Names of speeding fines include Herman Bochrodt J S Osborn Russell L Taylor M O Frank Lloyd A Gray Edward J Hammes and Earl R Hiller. Other fines list Marion A Swift Joe L Richardson Blaine B Goft Jerry Johnson Clifford Steele Elwood Kurtz Mike Allen and W L Hotle for intoxication and Jay Boyd Logan for disrespect toward an officer.
Merle and Eleanor Dickinson sue Cy and Mada Dickinson in district court seeking 12,400 in damages for loss of a farm lease in Washington County from March 1, 1950, to March 1, 1958. They say they repaired buildings worth 400 and were allegedly ousted on October 26. Attorney L. J. Kehoe represents the plaintiffs.
In Austin Minnesota a Chicago Great Western passenger train derailed after a switch tampering incident. The engine and five cars derailed near the city, injuring six men who are expected to recover. Sheriff Reinartz and Great Western officials continue the probe.

Robert I. Williams, 63, of Crawfordsville, died suddenly at home Monday morning after a heart attack. Funeral at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Crawfordsville Methodist Church with Rev. Earnest Smith officiating. Jones funeral home in charge. Born Jan 7, 1887 in Bemhesda Wales, he came to the United States in 1910 and worked for Marshall Fields in Chicago before settling in Crawfordsville. He ran a grocery business for 30 years, served on the Crawfordsville City Council, and was a trustee of Federated Church. Married Grace Cunningham in 1925 he is survived by his wife and two sisters in Wales, Nellie Roberts and Anna Mary Williams.

Mr and Mrs Ray Lowe celebrate one year of running the 92 cafe after buying it from Russell Miller who previously owned the business. The couple have remodeled the establishment and made the cafe the Burlington and Missouri Transit local headquarters since April 6. They invite patrons to visit next Tuesday and Wednesday for souvenirs.
Robert Barr Hallock 60 died Saturday after noon after a serious illness. Born in Illinois he lived most of his life in Brighton. Funeral was at 2 30 PM at Oumar Hoskins with Rev. R W Fillmore in charge. Burial in Brighton Cemetery. Hallock a plumber by trade served in World War I enlisting June 24 1918 Camp Dodge arrived overseas August 1918 served in France discharged June 1 1919. Survived by sister Mrs Julia Kime Mason City and brother Everett Brighton plus nieces and nephews. A sister died nine years ago.
Several hundred youngsters up to junior high will join a free Halloween party at the YMCA Tuesday starting 6 pm. The YWCA names judges for a costume contest with cash prizes and a parade to Central Park band stand for awards. Younger children see a movie while older kids tour the museum and gym in a separate program with free refreshments. Rural youngsters are invited, with support from local clubs including Rotary and Kiwanis.
District 1 of the Iowa Parents and Teachers Congress will meet in Davenport for the fall conference hosted by Davenport PTA council. The morning session begins at 9 30 with officer instruction and committee chairmen. Special guests include Mrs Breckenridge Madrid Mrs Kennison Madrid and Rev Deck. Washington delegates travel to the convention with three carloads of leaders.
Belgrade reports Tito praised the United States in Zagreb addressing the 3rd Congress of the joint anti fascist women league. He pledged Yugoslavia's support against Soviet aggression if Washington aids drought struck Yugoslavia without political strings. He warned UN action may follow if Moscow inspired provocations rise. Those favoring peace would have Yugoslavia on their side, while aggressors face opposition.
Funeral services were held in Iowa City today for S. P. Sandy 45 well known Washington county banker. Mr Sandy was owner of the Wellman Savings bank before moving to Iowa City about two years ago. Mr Sandy was stricken with a heart attack.
Funeral services for Henry Sutherland were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon at the Jones funeral home with Dr. W J Grossheim in charge. Pallbearers were Dale Woodburn Carl Schneider James Brooks John Wheelan Burdette Stover and John P Koehler. Burial was in Elm Grove cemetery.
United Press reports Premier Nehru protests Chinese invasion of Tibet near India’s northern border. Dalai Lama leads Tibet with minimal army, limited industry, and deep religious culture. Nehru hoped for Chinese inclusion in UN mediation to ease Cold War tensions.
Tokyo reported North Korean and Chinese Communist forces massed in northeast Korea threatening Hamhung and threatening allied supply lines. U S forces confirmed Chinese troops in action near Chosin reservoir and warned of possible large scale moves toward Hamhung as reinforcements raced to the area. A U S corps spokesman noted a Chinese regiment in combat south of Chosin reservoir and said the full unit was likely engaged. The reports mark official acknowledgment of Chinese forces operating in North Korea.
Funeral services for 67 year old Philip E Wanerus of Washington will be Tuesday at 2 PM at Jones funeral home with Dr C R Reed presiding. Burial follows at Hillcrest cemetery in Brighton. Wanerus died at home Saturday evening of a sudden heart attack after two days of ill health. He was born in Brighton October 12 1885 and married Ethel Frick in Monmouth Illinois July 15 1913. Survivors include a daughter Mrs Stanley F Smith and a son Philip R Wanerus plus a brother Fred Wanerus and sister Mrs G G Kisor.
Rain swelled rivers across Oregon isolating towns and forcing about 2000 people to flee. At least 18 dead or missing as five days of Pacific storms lash the region. National Guard aids evacuations in Douglas county while Red Cross assists in Roseburg Grants Pass and Myrtle Point. Major highways closed and thousands homeless in Eugene and Douglas counties.
The Iowa Highway Commission says Iowa is emerging from mud faster and cheaper than neighbors. Chief Engineer Fred White credits the 53rd General Assembly for highway law reforms and notes county groups and contractors building roads efficiently at better value, with Iowa using more federal aid contracts than all but Texas. The study shows Iowa highway bids last year ran about one third below the national average.
Harley Thompson received a one year sentence at Ft. Madison by District Judge J G Patterson on a charge of passing bad checks. The sentence was suspended and Thompson was paroled to Sheriff Charles Snyder.
The regular meeting of the cam era club is set for 7 30 tonight at the YMCA. Members are urged to bring prospective new members to this gathering.
Final rites were conducted at 9 a.m. at St James Church with Rev. R J Kinnavey presiding. The rosary was recited at the Jones Funeral Home Sunday evening at 8 o'clock. Pallbearers named were Frank Casey J E Lemmon Merle Lytle Leo Wolfe Charles Ragan and Charles Denison. Burial was in the local cemetery.

Tonight remains warm and fair with lows 45 to 50, then Tuesday highs around 75 to 81 with continued winds.
