Five blasts rocked Jerusalem railway station injuring areas and prompting evacuation. Police hunted suspects in the Montefiore quarter while about 50 Jewish men were detained. Two cars with five alleged Irgur Zvai Lemui members were stopped in citywide searches.
Iowa State Fire Marshal J W Stroum says arson is being investigated in Waterloo fires. Investigator A Lubberden has worked three weeks at fire chief Ray Tillers request. Major fires have caused over 350000 in damage this month including Herrick Refrigerator Co warehouse loss of 100000. Investigators also probe a Clinton fire.
Judge P J Siegers sentenced Dallas Wiese a 19 year old Montour Iowa to four months in the county jail but suspended the sentence for good behavior and placed him in the custody of Sheriff H M Putnam. Wiese admitted firing four shots into a car owned by Bob Garrett after claiming damage to his own car. The state was represented by County Attorney John C Owen and defense by L J Kehoe. Wiese works on the Rock Island railroad cut off construction.
A marriage license was issued today at the court house in Rob ert D B Swartzendruber of Kalona and Dorothy Jane Lemley of Ainsworth. Through the Centuries the art of weaving Oriental rugs has not changed with knots tied on a primitive hand loom.
About 509 Dexfer Washing Machine Co workers walk out in Fairfield Iowa halting production. Union members cite wage and condition disputes while non-striking staff stay at post. Negotiations continue with no violence reported.
The Fortnightly club plans a six scene historical play Our Golden Year about club members and events. The program follows the anniversary dinner Thursday November 7 with turkey dinner tickets on sale from leaders and at Nicola and Harmon starting Friday. Reservations due by Tuesday November 9. Mrs E E Stutsman and committees from the Woman's Society of Christian Service will serve. The play draws on club history from 1896 and features scripts by Mrs George Kerr and prologue by Mrs Hiram McCleery, directed by Mrs W A Erbe and Clarice Meek with the music department choir under Carolyn Hamilton and a string trio led by Mrs George Masson.
County Auditor Fred Beur e ois readies ballots for the upcoming election. Total printed 12,690 ballots for 22 precincts and township races. City of Washington receives 2,550 ballots with ward breakdowns for four wards.
Tickets for the Rubicoff violin concert on November 9 are mostly sold with more than two thirds of seats claimed. Advance sales are at Phillips & Hebner drUe store, with mail orders to them. student tickets cost $1.20 and adult tickets $1.80, including tax. Reservations urged as seats are selling rapidly.
Mrs. David H. McKee died this morning at University hospital in Iowa City. Funeral services are set for two o'clock Thursday at Glendale Cemetery in Des Moines.
Six days before voting, Democratic leaders forecast the House remains Democratic with 251 seats, while Rep Clarence Brown of Ohio argues Republicans will gain at least 40 seats from a 192 total. Brown claims polls are accurate and disputes charges of poll manipulation. Democrats also expect to retain Senate control though margins may narrow amid expected GOP wins in Pennsylvania New York Ohio and Massachusetts.
Letty Drangstveit files for divorce from Kenneth Drangstveit in district court. They wed June 28 1944 in Iowa City and have one child aged 18 months, with another four year old adopted child in dispute over custody. Plaintiff seeks custody of Samatra Lee, asks that Jean Marie be given to the defendant and requests ten dollars weekly support for the one child. Her attorney is L J Kehoe.
Des Moines Iowa October reports indicate most of the eastern two thirds of the state needs a killing frost and cooler weather to hasten corn and soybean harvest. Moisture from heavy rains and high moisture content delay cribs while farmers await dry conditions before piling corn.
The temperance council sues Columbia Broadcasting System in federal court for 15 million dollars claiming CBS refused ad time to temperance forces and sold to liquor interests to glamorize drinking. It seeks receivership and license revocation for seven CBS stations.
Merle R. Booth of Washington was ordained to the gospel ministry at a country church ceremony yesterday afternoon and evening. The Moody Institute graduate and former student pastor answered the council’s questions and received the charge from Rev. W C Rooke, with Rev. Harold Day presiding at Ottumwa. About 120 guests attended, with a missionary society dinner between sessions.
The Cotter class at Cotterizh School presents the play Take It Easy in the school auditorium this Friday at o clock.
Funeral services for Claude R. Waterhouse 62 are set for 2 380 Sunday in the Christian church at Brighton with Rev. Lloyd Smith and Rev. R W Fillmore officiating. Burial will be Hillcrest cemetery Brighton. Arrangements are by L A Jones funeral home. He died last Saturday in Berkeley California after years of ill health. He was born near Brighton November 22 1885 and married Ida Maude Hinshaw March 10 1907. He lived on a farm near Brighton Ollie Des Moines and California. He was a member of the Christian Church and Masonic Odd Fellows and Knights of Pythias. Survived by wife four brothers Lynn Fairfield Glenn Baxter Max Washington Ira Oakland one sister Pearl Woodford Oakland and several nieces and nephews. A son Harold Erle is deceased.
Parents and teachers report Lincoln school pupils collected thirteen thousand eight hundred twenty pounds of waste paper in a drive. About 250 students from all grades participated, yielding $2.25 for the school treasury. Second grade led with 3600 pounds, average per pupil 69.
Dr. Sam Higginbottom a famed Presbyterian missionary in India for over 40 years will speak at an eight o'clock Friday service in the Washington Presbyterian church. Washington churches invited include Salem Cotter Crawfordsville Brigton Bethel Sigourney Keota Columbus Junction and Haskins with Rev Rupert Spencer of Salem and Cotter conducting a portion of the service. Higginbottom heads Allahabad Christian College in India and is known for rural development efforts and popular speaking engagements.
George W. Rudiger district agent for Northwestern Mutual Life led the Davenport general agency fall meeting. Agents attended from Keokuk Centerville Ottumwa Newton Burlington Muscatine Clinton Davenport Rock Island and Moline. About 59 agents were present at the Washington country club with local aides Merle Lytle Robert McFarlane and S W Raster. A turkey dinner was served by Mrs Kuima Barnett.
Participating in the cast are Geraldine Quick Josephine Owens Marion Jones Alice Orris Marvin Hobbs Bill Podaris Keith Peters Bob Stapp Don Brown and Russell Dunsmore. The grade pupils will furnish music between acts.
Funeral services for Mrs Elna L Hull were conducted in the Crawfordsville Methodist church this afternoon with Rev Howard Ball presiding. A vocal duet by Mrs Howard Anderson and Mrs William Henss accompanied the service. Pallbearers were Richard Knowton Cleo Virgil Harry and Grant Fletcher. Burial followed in the Crawfordsville cemetery. Funeral arrangements were by L A Jones Funeral Home.
In Milwaukee on October 30 the Allis-Chalmers farm equipment plant saw non-striking workers pass gates under police protection after two tense days. About 200 pickets stood before the gates while 60 more gathered across the street as officers opened lanes for departing employees. In Racine on the same day CIO unions planned a one day citywide work holiday in support of the United Automobile Workers against the J I Case Farm equipment plant.

Mrs Tom Schulty aged 86 died this afternoon at her home 718 South Forth avenue. The body was taken to L A Jones funeral home. Funeral plans not yet made. She lived in Iowa most of her life and in Washington since 1918. She was a Methodist and member of the Rebekah lodge.
