Mrs Pyle mother of Mrs Carleton says her daughter did not kill Rev Leonard Christler and is hiring counsel to prove innocence. She questions ownership of a 38 caliber revolver found with the bodies and notes a 22 caliber pistol once hers. She collects letters she says are in Christler’s hand.
Indianapolis officials report the 1923 International 500 will attract a large foreign field. T. E. Myers sails for Europe to meet with European manufacturers as the motors size is reduced to 122 cubic inches for eligibility. Carl G. Fisher notes European engineers plan to reclaim honors at the classic race. Myers will work with W. F. Bradley of Paris over six weeks to discuss entries.
Riverside reports Joseph Bailey broke both arms above the wrists at his home five miles northwest of town. He fell from a rope while in a hay mow and only learned of the injuries after a physician examined him.
In Osaka on October 11 the Associated Press reports Dr Rentaro Mizuno Japan’s Home Affairs Minister cites rising consumption of sake from 4 266 954 koku in 1914 to 6 782 176 in 1919 and cigarettes from 87 174 460 to 17 995 000 000 as proof of growing extravagance. He links high wartime prices and increased purchasing power with lack of soundness and calls for economy. He notes foreign trade imbalance and rising entertainment prices as issues.
Washington October figures from the labor department show the hosiery industry among eleven of forty-two industries with fewer employees in September due to the return of long skirts. Despite this, thirty-one industries gained work, led by a 15.8 percent rise in car building and repairing, with cotton finishing up 11.3 percent and woolen 11 percent.
Reece Atkins of Dewar Oklahoma was shot to death after masked men attempted to kidnap him from a moving picture show. Spelter City constable Thomas Bogus was fatally wounded as gunfire erupted while a pursuit ensued. Constable George Davis fired at the fleeing vehicle as the machine drove away, carrying Atkins’ body.
The Journal introduces Betty Jane Michels daughter of Mr and Mrs Ted Michels arriving in Washington Saturday evening to spend a couple of weeks at the county hospital with her new mother. J H Finstey of Chicago expected tonight to visit friend Manton Hebner. Mrs Hebner visiting Mrs Tinsley in Chicago.
The U S Grain Growers Sales company of Minneapolis gains chamber membership linking Minnesota Farmers Bureau and farmers in the northwest to Minneapolis and Duluth markets. The firm will operate like other grain businesses, abide by chamber rules, and forego patronage dividends or commissions.
The home of Misses Ella and Sylvia Warren in Washington is being transformed into a fine new modern residence without losing its old time charm. The exterior will be stucco and the project by contractor D C Russell is progressing with the stucco work, promising an attractive appearance and added conveniences.
CHICAGO Oct 30. Mrs. J. Howard Jayne of Monmouth returns from Chicago where attorneys continue to search for her husband missing since last Tuesday. The former Illinois legislator valued their money at two million and Mrs. Jayne suspects he is being detained over business interests. Jayne moved to Monmouth from Marshalltown Iowa and was active in political and social circles with his wife and daughter.
Three men were crushed to death and two injured when a lumber car on the Burlington near Powder River station thirty miles west of Casper collapsed as lumber slid inside. The incident occurred as the eastbound train moved through the area.
Marshalltown October 30. Clerk E. P. Powell says two armed men held up his store at six o'clock and robbed him of more than $300 in Saturday's receipts, forcing him to turn over the cash.
Fanyuan Lien, former Chinese minister of education, plans a spring trip to the University of Iowa and Iowa State College to study American civic and agricultural education methods. He currently travels from Los Angeles and will proceed to Europe before returning to China.
In St Ives Cornwall two aging fishermen William Noall and Edward Cothey guard the cliffside bay daily hoping menhaden, called pilchards in Cornwall, return to their old fishing grounds along the Atlantic coast. Once rich pilchard numbers fell after a 14 year high, and engines frightened the fish away, risking local fortunes.
Dr Lyda Hellam left this morning for Des Moines to attend a chiropractic convention. Miss Lou Huskins fell and injured her hip but will be off her feet only a few days. Mrs W B Southwell of Burlington visits for the Mount Golden wedding. Leigh H Wallace brings two sets of Dent Siamese twins to the Journal, with Clem Edgar as a party. a decision on an operation was not yet made at 3 PM, the twins shown at the Journal office.
Benito Mussolini arrived in Rome to form a cabinet after King Victor Emmanuel granted him the post. A large Fascist crowd welcomed him at the station and Mussolini headed to meet the king. About fifty thousand Fascists camped within fifty miles of Rome guarding road approaches to the capital.
Des Moines Iowa report from the Red Cross notes Iowa school children are among the healthiest in the nation after 1922 health work. Physical exams covered about half of all boys and girls in towns and rural areas with lunches and clinics cited as key efforts.
Washington D C secretary of state Hughes announces quitting tobacco after receiving a large box of choice Cuban cigars. He notes the box is made from wood from specific trees and is hand carved. He says the cigars are passed out.
Mason City Ott died today after being scalded two weeks earlier when he turned a valve at a plant. The incident stemmed from a white hot steam release during work at the facility.
