Vice President Nixon drew large Davenport crowds as he campaigned for the GOP nomination. He attacked Kennedy's farm program and Democratic party as weak while praising Republican gains. Pro Kennedy demonstrators clashed along the motorcade route amid cheers and confetti.
Government figures show a 1 percent uptick in farm prices for crops and livestock in the month ending October 15, aided by higher hogs eggs and milk prices. Beef cattle corn grapefruit and potatoes offset some gains. The index runs 2 percent above October 1959, while production costs edge down due to slower wage growth.
West German Socialist MP Alfred Frenzel was arrested in the Parliament building on spying charges. The 61 year old defense committee member confessed after arrest along with two Eastern intelligence operatives. authorities also noted eight Communist agents were arrested earlier that week for gathering data from the Defense Ministry.
Lee R. Sands, 77, died of a heart attack at 6 p.m. Friday Oct. 28 1960 in his home at 948 South Fourth Avenue. Funeral services are set for 2 p.m. Monday at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Lloyd Latta officiating. Burial will be in Ainsworth Cemetery. He was a retired farmer and Methodist Church member, born March 28 1883 at Ainsworth. He married Eva E. Easter on March 17 1917. Surviving are his wife, two brothers Glenn and Frank, two sisters Mrs. Fred Donaldson and Mrs. Ida Rossof.
North West Airlines DC4 crashed on a pine mountain west of Missoula killing 12. Civil Aviation Board investigators began an inch by inch search of wreckage, with control failure cited as the probable cause. Pilot Capt James Perkins from Spokane and stewardess Ethel de Freese were among the dead.

Funeral services for Robert Vern Barnett 45 of Colbert Washington will be held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o clock in the Packwood Christian Church with Rev Richard Clifford in charge Burial will be in the Packwood Cemetery The body will arrive in Fairfield Tuesday morning and will then be taken to Gould Funeral Home in Richland where it will remain until time for the services Wednesday Barnett a former resident of the Rubio and Packwood communities died suddenly of a heart attack while working near his home in Colbert He and his family moved to Washington eight years ago and he had been employed there as a carpenter since that time He was born January 24 1915 son of Aubrey and Leona Hodson Burnett at Everest Kansas The family moved to Iowa in 1916 and settled near the Rubio community for several years and then moved to Packwood He was married to Lucille Husted at Newhall on May 22 1940 Survivors include four children Richard Kenneth Donald and Jacqua three sisters Maxine Kilburn Muscatine Mrs John Hadley Richland Mrs Kendall Milney Norwalk California two brothers Delbert Colbert and Sp5 Fredric stationed with the U S Army in Lawton Oklahoma
A Cuban airline pilot, Capt. Carreasco, defected from Havana after exchanging fire with guards. The DC3 landed safely in Key West with several wounded aboard, including a child, while U.S. immigration and FBI took charge. The flight originated from Camp Columbia and carried prisoners as part of Q Airways operations.
London dispatch reports Khrushchev urged that Soviet military aid to Cuba remain symbolic and not become a real intervention, after quotes from a Cuban journalist visit. He warned imperialist threats must not trigger actual military operations to avoid triggering Cuba’s allies.

Robert Bates, a 1958 graduate of the State University of Iowa College of Law, becomes an associate at Livingston Day and Meeker in Washington. He will start Nov. 1 after two years of claims work with an insurance firm in Denver. Bates is returning to Iowa, reuniting with family in the area and previously attended Wapello schools.
A reorganiza tion meeting for Crawfordsville and Ainsworth service areas is called for Tuesday evening November 1 at 8 p m in the Ainsworth gym. The session will discuss reorganization proposals and brochures from last summer will be explained. Residents are urged to attend.
