Turner, a 34 year old Black woman, told hospital attendants she was cut four times on a Birmingham street by a woman she did not know, after a passerby mistakenly called the assailant Oh, I'm sorry.
A safety demonstration sponsored by the Iowa Farm Bureau Federation toured Washington High and West Chester School. Assistant safety director Charles Cavagnaro led tests in a controlled car, measuring reaction and braking distances at various speeds to stress personal driving habits and safe speeds.
An explosion tore through the loaded oil tanker Blue Comet anchored in Lake Michigan near a South Chicago breakwater. One seaman was killed, two hospitalized, and eight treated for shock. Sheriff Thoral All testified about a note on a bank deposit slip pad found in Mrs Dillon s car referencing the Tangney Hotel. Marvin Buck a Spencer photographer testified about pictures taken of the hotel room after the death.
William McGriff 31 was arraigned on an assault with intent to murder charge for shooting his 34 year old girlfriend Dorothy Comstock Thomas in Des Moines. Judge Howard Brooks set bond at $10000 as Mrs. Thomas shows improvement from critical condition and her 10 year old son Mickey witnessed the incident.
Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. said rates rise Nov 1 in 15 Iowa border cities after FCC approval in Washington. Increases total 907000 dollars per year for about 80000 customers, with hikes up to 18 percent. Some long distance intra Iowa rates also change.

A Trans-Pacific DC6B airliner crashed in rugged woods near Half Moon Bay California shortly before reaching its destination after an 8600 mile flight.
