Outright Gifts Proposed for Europeans in Nov. 17 Session

Acting Secretary Lovett said the upcoming Nov. 17 special session will include outright gifts to European nations as part of the Marshall Plan. He noted final aid decisions rest with Congress and outlined three long range aid types: outright grants, loans, and a mix of both.

Apple Tree Raises Extra Crop for Year

KE. E. Ward brings in three yellow apples from a town tree as evidence of an extra crop this season. The fruit are crabapple size with the color scent and appearance of the early summer crop. Ward also shows a spray of a budding strawberry plant.

Missing plane carrying Oregon officials sparks search

A plane carrying Gov Earl Snell Secretary of State Robert Farrell state senate president Marshall Cornett and others disappeared in southern Oregon after taking off from Klamath Falls for Warner Valley. He described a four week lookout post in Washington state where no people were seen, watching for fires twenty minutes each hour and fighting three blazes. Howard Miller Taken by Death

Howard Pearson Miller 53 prominent in the American Legion in Washington died suddenly last night at his home from a heart attack after about an hour of illness. Funeral at 3 p m Friday at the Presbyterian church with Rev T E White in charge. Burial at Elm Grove cemetery. Arrangements by Sherman’s funeral home. Eastern Star will meet at the Masonic temple at 2 30 p m Friday to attend the funeral. Miller born Sept 6 1894 at Ainsworth son of David H and Emma J Miller was a WWI veteran active in Legion affairs and organized the Washington company of the Iowa State Guard in WWII was its first captain. He belonged to the Presbyterian church Masonic lodge and Eastern Star and was a former farmer active in the county AAA corn loan program. The family moved from Ainsworth to Washington when small. he attended local schools and graduated from Highland Park col.

Hollywood Hearings Charge Contempt in Communist Inquiries

Washington reports that during Hollywood hearings today hostile witnesses refused to answer if they are communists and were charged with contempt. Samuel Ornitz and Herbert J. Biberman were named with multiple affiliations and party cards while earlier writers faced contempt for refusal to answer yes or no.
