In Iowa a new civil defense policy ends general blackout drills unless ordered by the army. Rodney Q. Selby, state coordinator, says air raid danger has decreased and preparedness is advanced. The warning system stays but with reduced personnel and drills limited to defense corps members.
William de Bruyn of Woden was fined for illegal possession of mink pelts illegal possession of muskrat pelts and carrying a gun assembled on a tar on the highway. Sheriff L M Brower Deputy Eller A Katter and Gamewarden Jack Steven seized 108 muskrat pelts five mink pelts a pistol a rifle and a shotgun.
Few hunters hit the fields on opening day yet ring necks abounded and many bagged six pheasants by noon. Shooting began at 9 a m with clear skies and cool temps. Weather favored hunting while dogless hunters lost many birds in tall weeds.
At the Iowa Creamery Operators association convention in Waterloo A I Ronneberg of Mason City urged dairy farmers to combat oleomargarine misrepresentation. He said dairy farmers want oleomargarine sold on its true merits and urged action to protect consumer trust.
An investigation into complaints of a hedge hopping plane near Bloomfield Wednesday night ruled it a civilian aircraft and not a naval training plane from the local naval air station. Civilians are urged to record plane number and time of sighting before calling the naval station.
Mrs. Elsie L. Evins of Emerson and Claude V. McBroom of Des Moines were elected worthy grand matron and worthy grand patron at the Town Order of the Eastern Star closing meeting held at the Shrine temple. The grand chapter meeting culminated in 1944.
Wellman reports a county war fund total over half the $16,654 quota with $988 from Wellman and multiple districts in Lime Creek and English River townships contributing. Kalona and Riverside show progress but short of town quotas. several districts have not yet reported.
DES MOINES State health department figures show four new infantile paralysis cases in Iowa this week, keeping the year’s total at 194. The prior week totaled four, with 17 cases in the week before. The 1948 total nearly triples the 72 cases reported for all of 1942.

William C Handy, 69, the internationally known African American composer of St. Louis Blues and Memphis Blues, remained in critical condition at Haarlem Hospital after injuries from a fall from a subway platform yesterday.
The salvage department launches a key collection drive from November 1 through the month to aid the Victory scrap drive. Mrs. Fred Reid leads with county officials Lester B. Krabill W.A. Erbe and Sister Mary Xavierita overseeing rural and town school contests. Weekly tallies will publish, with prizes of 2 and 1 war savings stamps for first and second places in each group.
President Roosevelt hailed the Moscow conference of foreign secretaries a tremendous success and said agreements had been reached though not yet signed. He outlined a general war avoidance policy resolution and noted the talks produced strong spirit and quiet progress. The documents will be signed and published after formal approval in Moscow. Major Walter G. Conner, 223 West Madison Street Washington Iowa, is assigned as base provost marshal at the Army Air Base in Ogden Utah with a WWI service record and Iowa National Guard ties.
Two Washington county aviation cadets join the final lap of training at Lubbock Army Air Field. Hadley I Edmondson Jr is the son of Mr and Mrs Hadley Edmondson of 602 North 6th Street Washington. Marvin O Gingerich is the son of Mr and Mrs Lando Gingerich of Kalona. Cadets train in bi motor AT-17 Bobcats ahead of multi engine aircraft such as Flying Fortresses and Liberators. John Henry Ramseyer. 75, died yesterday afternoon at 6 30 at his son Harry Ramseyer's home 1415 East Washington Street where he had lived 3 1/2 years. Funeral at L A Jones Funeral Home tonight 7 30 with Dr F W Eastwood, then Mennonite church Pulaski Iowa Saturday 1 30 burial there. He was born Basil Switzerland March 4 1868 and came to Middletown Ohio at six. Survived by son, two sisters, four brothers, four grandchildren. Two sons and one daughter are deceased.
Cadet Gingerich from American Pearl Button Co. finished C P T training in Washington Iowa and worked as a sales clerk in Kalona.
A strong detachment of army troops guards 15 000 striking Japanese at the Tule Lake relocation center in northeastern California. About 350 other internees volunteering to harvest crops are being moved there from other camps as authorities promise firm action. No violence reported amid two barbed wire enclosures as national WRA director Dillon Myer is expected to arrive.
Three Washington county men left for Camp Dodge induction center as part of the October draft. A .30 caliber carbine cartridge box packed at an Indians Ordnance plant shipped to North Africa for the Sicilian invasion. An Ordnance soldier mailed the package home to his mother who works at the plant.

Two Wisconsin cattle buyers and an Illinois packing plant operator were charged with unloading more than 500000 pounds of tainted meat in Chicago. Some meat came from dead cattle shipped to Spring Grove Packing in Illinois. Indicted were Alexander Nowak, Edmund Nowak, and Samuel Stern.
