London reports Austria-Hungary accepts President Wilson's terms for peace and armistice. Vienna hands over control of the food supply to Czech authorities and calls for immediate steps toward negotiations with the Allied powers.
Paris reports an unofficial note from Austria Hungary to President Wilson via Switzerland. Paris headlines debate the empire’s fate with L Intransigeant claiming Austria accepts dismemberment and La Liberte declaring Austria no longer exists as Hungary edges toward breakup.
In the house of commons it was announced that since the war began British forces have captured 327 416 enemy combatants including 242 Germans. There are 7000 German combatants held in the UK. British casualties for the week total 32219, rising from 571 the prior week. Officers killed or died total 6, and wounded or missing 1141 officers and 25565 other ranks.
A Vienna war office release says Austro-Hungarian forces stormed and retook Monte Pertiea Monte Asolene and Muppe from Italian control. Earlier communiques claimed Austrian counter-attacks were repulsed.
American long range guns began shelling Longuyon and Vale de Ro Coce c on the railway line as German troops shift positions. General Pershing reports the First Army front north of Verdun enters its second month with heavy enemy losses and substantial American captures.
British troops report capturing more than 5,000 prisoners and 0 guns on the Austro-Italian front up to Sunday night as the Tenth Army resumes the attack. The war office says the offensive is progressing satisfactorily.
New York dispatch reports Count Janes Minette, an enemy alien, told Deputy State Attorney General Becker of alleged German backed negotiations to restore Caillaux to power in Paris and seek a separate peace with Germany. His deposition forwarded to France and Paris for Caillaux treason proceedings. Minette, from Berlin and Buenos Aires, testified after being brought from Fort Oglethorpe. The full testimony, once offered as evidence, remains undisclosed.
Testimony notes a long interview where the subject eagerly provided information to authorities. Becker confirms corroboration by multiple witnesses and collateral depositions. Depositions and Minotte's records were sent to the French embassy. Minotte acted as a go-between in the Cailla ux Luxburg conferences.
Washington reports the selective service will resume next Sunday as influenza declines in camps. The October draft size is unclear but expected to enlist all men who would have been inducted this month if not for the epidemic. Those registered September 12 will be drafted for the first time.
United States forces report heavy fighting along the Meuse east of the river with German positions at Hellenwoood and Cormnent Wood. An American attack north of Grand Pre in the Argonne was repulsed but gains were made near Rethel with 172 prisoners taken as units advance toward Attigny and the forest south of the Aisne between Attigny and Venee.
German forces retreat on a 16 mile front between the Oise and Serre as French gains advance five miles north of Crecy and along the Aisne. British attacks south of Valenciennes and improvements near Landrecies and Raismes report intensified fighting and disrupted German lines.
General Debeney's First Army breaks resistance on the Oise front and drives the foe from Guise along the Guise Marie road. He prepares a rapid push up the upper Oise valley toward Hirson and Vervins as German counter-attacks falter. British forces repulse a attack at Famars and improve positions near Valenciennes.
Coast guard reports survivors from two torpedoed steamers were landed at Barnegat and at Fed Harbor, New Jersey. Details remain uncertain as to which vessels were involved.
London report says Emperor William will not abdicate but may reframe his rights if it benefits the people, possibly becoming a hereditary president of a German republic. Amsterdam papers publish Wilson’s note. speculation grows on Hohenzollern dynasty’s fate and potential abdication amid press commentary.
Washington reports 18 ships with 100 total deadweight tons added to the U S fleet for the week ended October 25. Deliveries announced by the Shipping Board include the Victorious of 11 800 tons built at Alameda California and the Cape May of 10 100 tons built at Sparrows Point Maryland.
The Piave front yields to Allied assault with fifteen thousand prisoners taken. American troops in Italy remain in reserve for emergencies as Hungary declares independence under Count Karoly. The drive continues amid one of the war’s fiercest battles.
In the Verdun area the Germans opened a furious pre dawn bombardment along the center of American lines while American artillery replied. American patrols operated through the Santhen Villa wood throughout the night. Separately, reports from Constantinople say Turkey has independently sent peace proposals to the Entente powers.
Victor L. Berger and four other Socialist leaders are named in more than fifty indictments returned by a federal grand jury. Other defendants include BE T. Melms Oscar Ameringer Louis A. Arnold and Miss Elizabeth Thomas. Berger Melms and Ameringer are congressional candidates. Arnold serves in the state legislature.
Leslie Krueger, draft evader, arrested at Brainerd Minnesota and brought to La Crosse Wisconsin on a charge of resisting arrest with force of arms at his Owen Wisconsin home where four Krueger brothers fought a posse battle. He will be turned over to military authorities for desertion by U S District Attorney A C Wolfe. One man killed and several wounded in the battle.
London Oct. 20 Field Marshal Haig reports twenty six German airplanes were brought down by British forces. The British casualties include eleven machines. Leavenworth Kansas Oct 10 Dona M.
