About five hundred sea veterans and youthful reserves took part in the third annual state dog watch in Newton. Miller D. White of Marshalltown was elected skipper, the former seamen’s only office. Frank Miles, editor of the African Legionaire, declined another term and was named admiral emeritus.
Webster City city council dismissed J. A. Dunkle as city manager effective December 15. Dunkle had served in the post since March 1, outlining no reason for the dismissal.
Iowa City reports confusion over the University of Iowa birthday observance planned for February 25. The institution was founded February 25, 1847, making it 89 years old next year while alumni will celebrate the 90th founders day, created from the university's foundation.
Sioux City may or is reported to have attendance by Mayor W D Hayes at a conference with Governor Herring and other officials about selling state store liquor by the drink to bootleggers. Hayes calls the testimony a damned lie and denies attending any such meeting.
Des Moines teachers to press for substantial increases in education appropriations at the state convention this week. Officials expect calls for higher funding to support classrooms and programs.
Mike Driscoll, member of the Civilians Conservation Corps camp in Stone Park, Sioux City, said he cared most about his missing false teeth after being attacked in the railroad yards earlier. He noted he cannot eat without them.
Capt. R. M. Taylor of the regular United States army in charge of Civilians Conservation Corps camp No. 1750 at Ames was released on a $100 bond after arrest on an assault and battery information filed by Edward Ryan of Ames Iowa State College. Ryan says he and two other youths were beaten severely by CCC workers under Taylor's orders.

Spencer driver SPENCER-C. N. Carrow markets wool from 47 Angora rabbits none of which he keeps as sheep. Each rabbit is shorn three times annually yielding about one pound of wool sold to a New York firm. The fleece, finer than silk, is $7 per pound and used in rheumatism blankets as the warmest lightest material.
Recent farm land sales in Washington County show steady demand with prices up to 185 dollars per acre for prime farms. Notable deals include S. M. Pulver's 80 acres sold to R. R. Roberts at 175 per acre and Rollie Gallagher's 100 acres sold to Frank Soukup at 185 per acre, among others.
St James parish members can drive to church on a newly surfaced street as West Second opens for travel. Additional streets from West Main to Second and from West Third await opening, with East Madison nearing completion. Residents praise crushed rock asphalt surface. South Avenue D to Woodlawn Cemetery remains unsurfaced.
President Roosevelt announced in a national radio address from the White House that private industry has rehired nearly five million people since March 1933. He spoke for the 1935 Mobilization for Human Needs and urged public donations to private charities to ease the government relief burden.
The Washington county corn husking contest opens at eleven o clock tomorrow at Winemouse field northeast of town. Ten contestants will compete from 11 to 12 20 with one Hahn brother dropping out due to hand infection. Businessmen are urged to attend during the noon intermission. lunch will be served by Bethel Presbyterian church youth class.
Washington county farmers voted overwhelmingly in favor of a corn and hog control program directed by the AAA for 1936. A total 2 094 votes were cast with 1 575 signers and 65619 non signers this year. Signers voted 1 395 yes 180 no. Non signers voted 284 in favor and 236 against. Township vote details follow.

Louis Beranek of Richmond was arrested last night on a charge of driving a motor vehicle while intoxicated and was placed in the county jail awaiting a preliminary hearing. Dr and Mrs A W Clow attended Grinnell college homecoming Saturday.
The federal farm census reports Iowa raised 4,000,000 fewer hogs in 1934 than in 1930, dropping from 106,000,000 to 56,800,000. Cattle, aided by forage, rose by about 1,052,676 head to 4,569,590 despite drought. Sheep numbers also increased, as Iowa's agriculture shifted amid hard conditions.
Lee Carey of Laurel Marshall county set a world record by husking 2779.55 pounds of corn net weight in a three county contest in Grundy county. He led a four man Marshall team to victory over Grundy and Audubon squads and held a gross lead of 2860 pounds in 80 minutes.
The Washington County Hospital remains on the American College of Surgeons approved list after surveys of 692 hospitals in 1918 and 2,523 of 3,565 in 1935. Iowa now has 51 approved hospitals in 28 cities, with Decorah Community Hospital the smallest on the list and 35 beds at Washington County Hospital. The list includes major facilities such as University Hospitals at Iowa City and veterans’ hospitals in Knoxville and Des Moines.
The county board of supervisors at a Saturday meeting passed a resolution appointing Miss Jane Ludy as county welfare worker. She entered county service and will be paid from county funds. For two months Miss Ludy served in a welfare role.
The U S Supreme Court will hear arguments December 9 on the constitutionality of new deal tax measures in the Hoosac Mills case touching cotton processing taxes. The decision signals testing of major suits before ruling on Bankhead cotton control act challenges. The court also refused to revisit its stance on Tom Mooney's appeal, leaving the California Supreme Court case unresolved.
The week sees 103 bottles of free milk for four ward schools, with 176 total bottles served including paid portions. Costs run about $51.69 per month at current usage, up from last year's $42, and 73 dollars has been donated so far this year.

During Sept 30 to Oct 26 the National Re-employment Service in Washington issued orders for 128 workers referred 124 applicants and placed 11. Nine openings remain unfilled. The office received 17 new applications and re-interviewed 489 people. Active files dropped from 479 to 297 as cooperation with employers grew. 87 placed from relief rolls 37 from public relief and 82 from sustaining lists. Most placements were in public works with 11 to private employers. The office made 19 employer contacts. Open 8:30 to 4:30 daily. Renew new applications every 30 days. Farmers listed 27 corn shuckers.
The 13th anniversary of Mussolini’s march on Rome finds Italian forces in northern Ethiopia awaiting orders to advance southward. Dispatches say the big push has not begun and minor penetrations occurred along the front with little resistance.
Superintendent F E A Ralston announced Washington school will dismiss Thursday at noon for the rest of the week to attend the state teachers convention in Des Moines. A small group leaves earlier while the remainder depart Thursday afternoon. Edith Shields Leila Anderson Gertrude Morrison and Althea Montgomery are in the party due to convention duties.
Miss Pearl Gardner relocates to the Brookhart apartments assisted by her sister Mrs. Eva Crawford who accompanies her during the move.
