Boy Scout Troop 242 holds a paper drive on Saturday morning November 5 from 8 a.m. to noon. Residents should place papers on the curb for pickup and call 653-2030 or 653-5217 if not collected.
The Southeast Iowa Planned Parenthood book sale drew many attendees and runs through Friday at 9 p.m. daily. The first day raised over $600 from books magazines records and games, as part of the annual fundraising effort held at the National Guard Armory.
Mount Pleasant Iowa authorities initiated extradition for Larry G Brewster 34 of Clinton sought in Henry County on murder charges in the January stabbing death of Eugene W Smith 60 whose body was found at his home March 27 Brewster is jailed in Algona Louisiana serving a three year sentence for breaking and entering and used an assumed name officials said the case ties him to the Mount Pleasant killing.
Randall Bennett, 22, attacked a Davenport police officer with a knife and was shot after disobeying an order to stop. Bennett remained in serious condition at Mercy Hospital with a bullet wound from the back near the shoulder and out through the chest. Officer Eric Swanson was unharmed and placed on administrative duties pending investigation.
About 7,200 state technical employees in Iowa will vote over three weeks to determine if AFSCME should represent them in a one year collective bargaining contract starting July 1 1978. If approved the union would nearly double those with bargaining rights. more than 300 classifications would be covered.
A record 90 913 workers were placed in jobs by the Job Service of Iowa in the year ending Sept 30. Kenneth L. Hays, director of the placement division, said the figure tops all previous levels and notes the prior high was 73 890 in fiscal 1976.
A fire erupted Wednesday night in the Iowa State Penitentiary cell of inmate L. T. Jones who had been stabbed earlier in the day. Jones, 26, serving 25 years for aggravated robbery, was taken to University Hospitals in Iowa City with two upper abdominal wounds. Inmates in Cellhouse 18 assisted officers in evacuating prisoners as firefighters controlled the blaze.
A House-Senate conference aims to finish the energy conservation portion of the Carter package while debates over tax credits and car efficiency continue. Conferees endorsed home solar loans and federal building efficiency, studied industrial energy use, and weighed a van pool rejection. Defense Secretary Brown warned on security if energy legislation stalls. FTC prepared rules pushing R values over insulation thickness in ads.
Dozens of civilians including wedding guests were killed or wounded when government troops clashed with Moslem rebels off Sacol Island near Zamboanga City. Army says five boats carrying armed men were spotted as reinforcements moved in. the island is a suspected jump‑off for attacks on the Christian port city 500 miles south of Manila.
DES MOINES UPI The Governor's Coalition on Iowa Issues endorsed a fuel tax hike pending in the Iowa Senate. House already approved 3 cent per gallon boosts for gasoline and diesel to fund road work, but the measure stalled in the Senate. The coalition backed a compromise formula reallocating funds to cities and maintaining the extra $50 million in the Road Use Tax Fund, while a city county and school vehicle exemption faced Senate opposition.
Des Moines has received 1.775 million dollars ahead of the regular disbursement schedule amid a legal debate on whether the state comptroller may advance money to political subdivisions. Officials note a 1974 law allowed advances during a fiscal transition, but the provision was removed by 1977. Observers call the authority a close question while Des Moines presses for more aid from municipal, liquor, and road funds.
Area residents attend a Halloween dance to raise money to complete payments on a transport incubator for infants needing special care. Sponsored by the Advanced Life Saving Association of Washington County, the event runs Friday night at the K C Hall from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. The incubator, half funded by a local donor, will be on display and powered by battery to operate during transport. It is insulated and temperature controlled to aid survival during moves to or from Washington County Hospital. Additional life saving equipment may also be shown as funds allow.
Washington Community School District board discussed lighting and bus storage issues and heard a handicapped child education presentation. They voted to install security lights at the junior high and accepted Doug Dunlap's resignation as high school baseball coach. No replacement named.
Ralph Graber of Pacemaker Buildings Inc announces transfer of sales and construction in southeast Iowa to former employees John Prochaska and Michael Lebsack. Their firm P&L Builders Inc will operate from a highway one location near Washington, employing about 25 people, with operations starting mid December.
A clear and cooler night is expected with overnight lows ranging from the low 30s in the north to the mid 40s in the south. Friday will be sunny and cooler in the south with daytime highs in the 60s.
Gen Bernard Rogers, top Army commander, says the United States may need to resume the draft within two years to address a widening reserve manpower gap. He urges reactivating Selective Service to register and classify potential draftees and notes that drafting women could be considered if a return to nonvolunteer service occurs.
