In Circleville Ohio a crowd surged to shake hands with Governor Frank Lausche on a Monday visit. He had to retreat up platform steps before resuming, glancing down as two men clasped each other’s extended hands in greeting.
George L. McDaniel 69 prominent Washington businessman and community figure died after a noon heart attack. Funeral 3:30 pm Thursday at Washington Methodist Church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. McDaniel owned McDaniel drug store over 30 years and was president of Washington State Bank. Survived by wife Ida, son Merritt, daughter Alice, three grandsons, brother Don, and several relatives.
A 32 state caravan asked the Eisenhower administration for price supports on live cattle at a minimum of 90 percent of parity. The National Farmers Union backed a program including direct government purchases if needed as they pressed Benson and Morse for urgent action amid steep price declines in the cattle industry.
An Indian official acknowledged some truth to charges that Allied agents operate in anti Red prison camps near Panmunjom but said reports are highly exaggerated. He noted 400 alleged agents among 22 500 anti Communist POWs and said the evidence remains unclear and disputed by both sides.

At the United Nations the United States charged Soviet personnel helped Chinese and North Korean Communists extract confessions from American airmen captured in Korea. Ten repatriated prisoners provided affidavits detailing alleged torture. The issue sharpens as the Soviet plan to condemn bacterial weapons resurface.
Funeral services were held at 2 p m Monday at Jones funeral home led by Dr. Evert L. Haney. Pallbearers included Howard Hagans Jack Hagans Francis Romine C E Clark Cloud Willits and George Breitenbach. Burial followed at Elm Grove cemetery.

Mrs. Don Minick secretary reports that donations in the cure rent fund drive have reached 17446.88 dollars. The figure covers 55 percent of workers in the residential areas and organizers hope to reach the 23500 dollar goal soon as work continues.
M M Schell superintendent and John Lee school board member spoke at a Jaycees meeting about the new school addition and gym. Schell praised planning and a strong coaching staff urging support for Washington in the Little Six. Lee outlined gym facilities and project innovations during a post meeting tour.
Funeral services for Leslie Zook will be held Thursday October 29 at 2 p.m. at Jones funeral home. Zook, 58, died Monday at 1:30 a.m. in Iowa City Veterans hospital. A longtime Washington resident, he will be interred in Elm Grove cemetery. Washington WRC members will meet at the library corner at 1:45 p.m. to attend.
Evangelist Rev. Robert Blodget will speak at the Christian Tabernacle this evening at 7 30 oclock. He is joined by two young singers Mr and Mrs Alfred Mitchener providing music for the service.
All employed women are invited to the regular luncheon at the YWCA on Wednesday October 28 at noon. The program will end at 12 54 PM allowing guests to return to their jobs on time. Mrs. Merle Eckels will entertain with musical readings. Miss Mosier and Miss Field from the Iowa District office will be special guests.
All Washington county teachers are invited to a social potluck at Lincoln School in Washington on Thursday October 29 at 6 30 p m. No business meeting is planned. Each attendee should bring a dish of food sandwiches and table service.
Harvey Holden was re elected president of the Washington County Farm Bureau at the annual meeting Monday night in Ainsworth. Officers elected included Willard Palmer vice president Lawrence Miksch secretary Ray Whisler treasurer and Mrs Raymond Whisler vice chairwoman of the women group. Radio host Herb Plambeck spoke on farm program changes and urged better public relations soil conservation and improved farm labor relations.
Area youngsters are invited to a community Halloween party on Saturday October 31 sponsored by YMCA YWCA Junior Chamber Rotary Kiwanis Y's Men and Chamber of Commerce. Events start with a 6 30 p m costume parade from the YMCA around the square to the band stand with prizes. After the parade a 6 50 p m program continues with magic music and a Francis the talking mule film. Free treats of popcorn balls apples and peanuts await guests as they leave.
The district court directed verdict for the defendant in the case John J. Kiene vs Marion Stransky on September 30. Mr Kiene has appealed to the State Supreme Court requesting full case review.
Frigid air drove temperatures below freezing across most of the state with Decorah at 20 above, Waterloo 22, Mason City 24, Des Moines and Lamont 25, Spencer 26, Council Bluffs 28, Cedar Rapids 30, Dubuque 30, Sioux City 31, Ottumwa 36, Davenport 41 and Burlington 42. A trace of snow near Knoxville from high clouds was reported by the Iowa Highway Patrol as warmer air moved in later.
The Republican party seeks wins in New York New Jersey and California to restore prestige after Wisconsin losses. A NYC mayoral upset would boost morale while New Jersey and California contests aim to hold GOP seats in Congress. The party must win these by elections to stabilize the House balance.
A federal grand jury in Kansas City began deliberations in the Bobby Greenlease kidnapping, aiming to indict the confessed kidnap killers under the Lindbergh law. The panel of 23 jurors heard the charge from Judge Richard M. Duncan as investigators focus on the $380,000 missing from the $600,000 ransom. Witnesses include St. Louis officer St. Louis Shoulders and cab driver John Hager, who helped trigger the arrest of Carl Austin Hall and Bonnie Brown Heady. Hager testified instructions were given to return at 1 p.m. to reappear. U S District Attorney Edward R. Scheufler plans to prosecute.
Iowa's corn harvest is advancing rapidly and more than four fifths completed, the U S Weather Bureau reported. This is the greatest progress for this date since records began in 1946 and ahead of 1952 and average. Harvesting is uniform state wide with over two thirds finished. Much corn remains in fields for gleaning by hand or feeding livestock.
A line of storms moving northeast from East Texas lashed the Texas Coast with winds up to 84 mph. It dumped 2.59 inches of rain on Lake Charles and 3.18 inches on Memphis. Six people were injured, 46 homes damaged, and 20 aircraft wrecked or damaged. The system brought needed rain to drought areas in Arkansas Kansas and Missouri as it spread into the Ohio Valley.
