A sewer system gas escape at the Iowa Engineering Co. in Cedar Rapids sickened one man and 19 women on Monday, company officials said. The defect was fixed and the plant operated at full capacity on Tuesday as 12 hospital patients were released.
In Des Moines, officials expect the pheasant season to open Thursday in 65 Iowa counties with the smallest hunter turnout in years due to selective service and fuel shortages. Bird population, however, is at a record high.
United States district court in Cedar Rapids filed an indictment charging Louis Roe Roemig Jr aged 44 with sabotage for a June 7 fire at the Middle Amana three story refrigeration and air conditioning factory. Damages are estimated at 250000 and he is held in Linn County jail on a five thousand dollar bond.
Sigourney authorities announce an indictment for first degree murder against Carl Knox a 3% Sigourney livestock buyer. He is accused of killing his bed fast father Walter Knox 69. Knox is jailed after state agents and Keokuk county officials investigated and he reported his father died July 22 of natural causes the prior night.
Waterloo city council approved an ordinance requiring all milk sold or distributed within the city limits to be pasteurized. The measure aims to ensure dairy safety and protect public health in Waterloo.
Ten cases were disposed of in federal court before Judge George Scott with guilty pleas. Gus Glaser a meat dealer from Fort Dodge was fined 1500 dollars and costs for violating meat price ceilings. Francis Asberry Gulick a 65 year old bank janitor from Sioux Rapids Iowa was sentenced to six months in jail for stealing 750 dollars but the sentence was suspended and he was placed on probation for 18 months. A leniency petition signed by 150 Sioux Rapids residents was on file.
Mr and Mrs G Cocklin place a bee hive high in a tree on a 50 foot town lot to solve their sugar problem. A swarm arrived soon after and they recently harvested a good crop of honey.
Five Chrysler employees have car-shared since 1987, slashing their daily 50 mile round trip to work by about 80 percent. The program highlights practical downsizing and cooperative commuting among factory staff.
The county campaign for the national war fund reports Washington donations totaling 1915.25 with Brighton at 507.50 and West Chester at 281.85. A drive of 75 women began house to house canvassing to reach a 4500 town quota, with meetings and reports from district leaders guiding volunteers.

The Navy announced the loss of the submarine Runner, a 1525 ton LO1 class craft commissioned July 30 last year. It carried a normal complement of 65 and crew next of kin have been notified. The submarine was likely operating in the Pacific, making it the 12th American loss there and the 14th overall in this war.
Under arrangements with the post office department finders of lost ration books may drop them in the mail without prepaying postage or envelopes. Books are returned to the name and address on the cover with five cents postage due. If addressee is not found the post office forwards the book to the nearest local board and officials urge filling out the address blank.
G Chrysler state official and Grinnell mayor will address Washington Rotary Club on November 1 at noon. He serves as one of Rotary International's 1325 governors overseeing 5100 clubs in 11 countries and was nominated as Ao Vernor at Cedar Rapids in April and elected at St. Louis in May.
The Valley Forge general hospital at Phoenixville Pennsylvania seeks 200 canes for wounded veterans learning to walk again. Arie Huisman is Washington county chairman for the project. Donate any usable canes to Martins Cleaners within the next few days to be shipped together.
Washington reports that beef price ceilings set by Economic Stabilization Director Vinson could trigger a winter shortage, with ceilings up to 16 dollars per hundredweight in Chicago. Rep Kleberg denounces the move as hastily and ill advised, accusing Vinson of bypassing the War Food Administration to aid packers.
President Roosevelt will meet today with a committee of industrial and business leaders in Washington in the first conference on their participation in the war effort. The White House announced and Roosevelt sent telegrams to participants.
County farmers will hear a portion of the annual County Farm Bureau meeting broadcast on KXEL Waterloo. The program features interviews with M M Rabenold president of the Farm Bureau Mrs Merle Twinam 4 H member Bertha Flading Ruth Foster and J W Chandler along with Senator Kendall Lynes introduction and part of his address. The broadcast time was moved to 1130 AM October 30 for better daylight reception.
Five days earlier a call was made to organize the group and invite its members to the White House. The president stated in telegraphs that discussions would focus on making industry participation in the war effort most effective.
Washington Cooperative Service company manager Glen B. Holden was elected president of the Iowa Refrigerated Locker Association, with Carl Hinrichs L. C. Shellabarger Max Green and Henry Hacket chosen as vice presidents. Holden takes office November 1 as the state’s refrigerated locker industry expands with about 450 plants and growing memberships.
Government moves the coal wage dispute to John L. Lewis as 1.45 million railroad workers vote on a strike. War Labor Board rejects a contract, offers a seven day compromise of 10 dollars per week, setting basic mine pay at 8.12 a day if UMW accepts. The WLB warns it could send the case to President Roosevelt if wildcat strikes continue.
Howard J. Schmitt files with district court against Chicago Milwaukee St Paul railroad over a collision at a highway crossing three miles southwest of Washington on November 6, 1942. He says the train caused his car to be wrecked, valued at 950 before and 65 after, seeking 885 dollars plus costs. Morrison Morrison represents the plaintiff.
Soviet forces near encirclement of Krivoi Rog in the Dnieper bulge press forward. Inside the pocket the town of Solenoye fell and 18 other towns were captured as German standoffs and rail exits were narrowed. In Italy, German lines retreated to fortified positions while Allied forces pressed forward across the peninsula.
County reports complete general registration for War Ration Book 4 at designated school sites. A total of 5 728 group applications were received in the county and 17 134 War Ration Book 4 books issued, with the issuance divided as follows.
