Washington's Kiwanis club announced a community service tree replacement program to be carried out in coming weeks. Trees will be sold to the public at a discount through a local nursery agent to replace elms and maples killed by Dutch Elm disease and related diseases.
Herbert Hoover, who guided a turbulent era with gentleness, was buried Sunday beside his birthplace in West Branch Iowa. Ninety nine year old ex president, his family and 76 000 mourners attended the service. No 21 gun salute due to Quaker pacifism.
UPI reports Senator Barry Goldwater campaigned on Maryland's Eastern Shore deriding President Johnson and Senator Humphrey. He warned of risks from Humphrey's vice presidency, tied Humphrey to ADA, and criticized Johnson's call for a national mandate and increased economic planning. Goldwater outlined a broad final-week tour and stressed centralized government morality and anti communism.
In Waterloo Iowa UPI a sixteen year old named John Kyle was sentenced to life in prison for the first degree murder of Diane Kay Gable aged nineteen. Judge Blair Wood declared the open murder charge guilty and imposed life at hard labor after a verdict of guilty. Kyle showed no emotion as about one hundred spectators packed the district court.
A voter explains how an elderly or shut in person can cast a ballot by mail. Obtain an absentee ballot from the county auditor, vote it, have the accompanying affidavit notarized, and return to the auditor at least one day before election day.

Mrs. Robert Cooney age 67 died at her Richland residence likely from a heart attack. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 9 a.m. at Mother Cabrini Church with Rev. L J Bergthold. Burial in St Michael Cemetery Holbrook. Survivors include husband two sons Bernard and Dean six grandchildren four brothers and a sister.
Lenna Van Alst Knight death notice records Frank P Knight’s widow died Oct 24 1964 at Washington County Hospital after months of illness. Funeral at Jones Funeral Home Tuesday 2 pm with Rev W J Stevens and Rev William Arnold officiating. Burial in Lawnwood Cemetery. Survivors include son Clyde, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren, two sisters Ethel Curtis and Theo Johnson, and brother Jack Van Alst.
President Johnson touring Florida Georgia and South Carolina charged Barry Goldwater offers the most radical program since the Civil War. He urged unity and warned Goldwater’s plan would threaten Social Security and American prosperity with a bid to shift the nation. Crowds estimated up to 160,000 greeted him in Orlando and along the route.
Richard Matthew, Program Secretary of the Washington YMCA, has been elected Vice-President of the Iowa Physical Education Society at the annual fall meeting at the Cedar Rapids YMCA. The society oversees inter YMCA sports in Iowa including swimming, basketball, tennis, tennis, volleyball, handball, paddleball, judo, and badminton.
Iowa's traffic toll stood at 660 today, 116 higher than a year ago and only 40 short of the all time yearly record set in 1956. Three Iowans died in weekend crashes including Ralph Desperdang in Alton, Michael Orvick near Kanawha, and R W DeVoss in Red Oak, with additional out of state deaths and a Friday tractor mishap near Hospers. Bee stings are less annoying to seasoned beekeepers than mosquito bites.

Estel Eugene Brinton 25 of Washington died in a truck crash Saturday October 24 1964 at Dos Palos California. Funeral Wednesday 1 30 p m at Sherman Eden Funeral Home with Rev Stanley Woeste officiating. Burial in Brighton Cemetery. Visitation Tuesday evening. Born October 18 1939 in Jefferson County he was son of Lyle Brinton and Wanda Shaffer Brinton. He lived in Washington and graduated from Brighton High School. He served four years in the U S Navy and belonged to the Methodist Church. Survivors include his father in Washington his mother in Iowa City brother Edward sister Barbara both in Iowa City paternal grandmother Mrs Carrie Brinton of Brighton and maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs Howard Shaffer of Brighton.
Two fires Sunday at Columbus City prompted the Columbus Junction fire department to respond twice. A tree ignited by a brush fire at the D R Coil residence was extinguished with little damage. A grass fire at Dale Edmonds farm, two miles southeast, burned about 70 acres of pasture before being controlled.
