A young Russian student outside the U.S. Embassy in Moscow stopped shouting hands off Cuba and asked an American correspondent if he spoke English. The scene illustrated how individual Russians and Americans remain friendly despite Cold War tensions.
A home economist will assist the local county extension office one day a week to partially fill a vacancy after Marilyn Thatcher moved to Iowa City. Martha Gendelman of Grinnell will also aid Keokuk and Mahaska counties and previously worked as extension home economist in Adel Iowa.
Funeral services for Mrs Phereby Lucindia Snider 83 will be Sunday at 2 30 p m in the Sherman Eden Funeral Home with Rev William Morehouse officiating. Burial follows in Keota Cemetery. She died after a month illness in Washington County Hospital. She lived at 603 North Fifth Avenue.
Republican and Democratic candidates for State senator and state representative joined Jackson Township Farm Bureau Women for a discussion on campaign issues. Speakers included Democrat Dale H. Rickert and Republican Richard A. Stephens for Senate seats from Washington and Louisa Counties, with John W. Elliott and Keith L. Vetter contesting the State House seats.
Members of the Washington Golf and Country Club must remove golf clubs and personal property from the clubhouse or have it locked up for the winter. Superintendent Harold Kerr says his family will leave soon and this weekend is the last opportunity to access the clubhouse before spring.

He expected to return to New York for a rescheduled session with Thant as Thant planned separate talks with Zorin and Garcia Inchaustegui. Three day standstill talks anticipated for Cuba crisis.
Dr Ernst J Frei of Manila Philippines will headline the annual Thank Offering service at Marion Avenue United Presbyterian Church on Sunday October 28 at 10 45 am. After nearly thirty years in the Philippines he has served as acting treasurer of the Presbyterian Mission in Seoul and will return to Manila in January 1963 for reassignment by the United Church of Christ in the Philippines.
The 90 minute Martin Luther film will be shown Sunday at 7 pm at Immanuel Lutheran Church. A special Reformation service sponsored by the Washington Council of Churches invites the community to attend and join a reception after the screening.
Iowa officials led by Governor Norman Erbe reviewed shelter programs amid Cuba tensions. They reported 600000 shelter spaces located or planned for 2.5 million Iowans with Des Moines marked and stocked shelters. Army plates and stock shortages were noted. officials urged communities to map shelters and families to decide on public or private options.
Blockade units report a state of emergency across India as Communist Chinese troops push toward Bomdilla. The advance includes 10,000 troops capturing Towang and clashes near Jang, with other forces 15 miles south from Kibitoo near the Burma border. No casualty figures released, while diplomacy centers on cease fire talks and a proposed 12.5 mile pullback.
Mrs. Margaret Engle 81 of 41442 West Second Street died here Thursday after two weeks of illness. Born January 23, 1881 in Washington County she was married to Henry A. Engle who died in 1949. Funeral services set for Saturday at 1 30 pm at Jones Funeral Home with Rev. Lloyd Latta. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors include a daughter Hazel Strum and three sons Edward Marion Alvin. two brothers Louis and John Ritz. a sister Irene La Brant.
Republican women from Iowa’s first district halted in Washington after a late change. They visited Everetts Music Store to campaign for GOP candidates as Atty. General Evan Hultman joined briefly, amid low turnout and chilly reception in the southeast Iowa swing through Burlington.
Four heavy IBM machines were unloaded by truck and lifted through Seifert's second story window into a rear second floor room. The systems will serve the bookkeeping department for Seifert's chain of women’s clothing stores. Bob Vanderlinden of Washington is the comptroller with an office in the local store.
The Labor Department reports a 0.6 percent rise in September the largest monthly gain since February 1958. Meat prices led the increase tied to the National Farmer's Organization strike ending Oct. 3 with eggs and apparel also contributing. Transportation and housing costs also climbed while 25 million Americans will receive 2.3 billion pounds of donated food via USDA direct distribution this year.
United States Ambassador Adlai Stevenson and Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Valerian Zorin faced off in the Security Council demanding yes or no answers about Soviet missiles in Cuba. Zorin avoided a direct denial while Stevenson pressed for verification and urged UN involvement to avert crisis.
Two U S Navy destroyers halted the Lebanese flagged Maruela sailing under Soviet charter to Cuba. Boarding found no prohibited cargo and the ship was allowed to pass, marking the first boarding since Kennedy issued the arms quarantine.

Survived by five daughters, two sons, 20 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren and brother Stephen of Davenport.
