Prisoner Escapes City Jail By Prizing Window Bars

Elmer Lavora 40 of Iowa City fled the Washington city jail early today after prying apart south window bars and squeezing through a narrow opening. Police checked the cell at midnight and found him gone at dawn. Lavora, with a long record since 1940, had been jailed on an intoxication charge and later suspected in other offenses. Authorities plan to close the lower window and install new bars.

Deaf and Dumb Man Faces Court Over Drunken Driving

In Greenville South Carolina a deaf and mute man was hauled to court on drunken driving charges. Officers stated he held 12 licenses from different parts of the county.

Junior Red Cross Membership Drive Planned in Washington County

Robert Everetts announces a county wide Junior Red Cross drive from November 1 to 15 at Washington High School. All students may join with a one cent donation and can serve through packing overseas gift boxes and making favors for homes and veterans facilities. Dorothy Kos chairs county student committee.

Deadline Near for Chicago Livestock Show Entries

Washington County extension agent Thomas A Robb reminds 4-H members and others that November 17 is the deadline to enter classes for the International Livestock Exposition in Chicago. The event runs November 24 to December at Union Stock Yards. Entry blanks are available at the extension office.

Woman Found Dead on Burlington Tracks Near Albia

The body of Mrs. Mary Tweustrup, 36, wife of Dr. Clifford W Twenstrup, a West Des Moines dentist, was found mangled on Burlington railroad tracks near Albia. Sheriff Goodwin said she was killed by a train, with an investigation planned to determine exact cause.

Atomic Explosion Postponed Today

Unfavorable weather forced the Atomic Energy Commission to cancel a scheduled explosion at the Frenchman Flat testing ground near Las Vegas. The AEC lifted civilian aircraft restrictions within 150 miles of Las Vegas and noted ground troops were slated to participate in the test.

County Medical Group in Wellman Meeting

Members of the Washington County Medical Society hosted wives and guests for a turkey dinner in Wellman. Dr Don C Conzett of Dubuque Iowa president of the Iowa State Medical society spoke briefly. Mrs. Carrie Blake Dies At 85 In Keota Hospital

Carrie C. Blake 85 died at 7 50 this morning at the county home hospital where she had lived since 1945. Funeral services set for 2 PM Monday at the Baptist church with burial in Keota cemetery. Survivors include a brother Ralph Coffman of California and sister Mary England of Davenport. husband Leroy Blake died in 1891. Arrangements by Sherman’s funeral home.

Heart Attack Fatal To Accident Victim In Des Moines

A 61 year old Des Moines woman died at Mercy hospital apparently from a heart attack while awaiting treatment for a broken arm after an auto crash. The driver Roberta Carroll 26 Des Moines treated for shock at Broadlawns and released. Another passenger William Mueller 25 unharmed. Sheriff deputies said an unidentified driver pulled into a curb on Fleur drive causing the collision.

Funeral At Wellman For Edward L Hudson

Funeral services for Edward Lewis Hudson Wellman will be held Saturday at 2:40 PM in the Powell funeral home with Rev. George Hiller in charge. Burial follows in Peirson cemetery. He died October 24 at University hospital in Iowa City. Born July 4, 1898 in Ifreen Valley, he was the son of Jesse and Ella Long Hudson. He married February 21, 1929 to Mdna Perrin. Survivors include his wife and three children Edward of West Chester Mervin and Marilyn at home, four grandchildren, and two brothers Charles of North English and Lawrence of Kinross.

Rex See Honored As Retiring Scoutmaster

Rex See, Scoutmaster at the Presbyterian church, was honored at a brief Thursday night program. He will depart Tuesday for Chicago for instruction to become a railroad mail clerk. The last Scout meeting under his leadership was held last night and he received a gift from the troop and the troop committee. No successor to Mr Lee has been named.

Deloney county agent in Fort Mitchell reports a Hereford cow gave birth to twin calves of Brahma and Hereford breeds. He notes such mixed births occur roughly once in 600,000. The remark follows Brillat Savarin quotation about happiness from new discoveries.

David Krebs Dies in Korea at General Hospital Tokyo

Riverside report states Pfc. David Krebs son of Mr and Mrs Clyde Krebs Ft Collins Colorado was mortally wounded by a mortar shell in Korea on May 20 1951 and remained unconscious until his death. Funeral services are planned in Ft Collins on Saturday October 27.

Truck Drivers Bound Over After Overload Charge

James L. Moreland of Omaha Nebraska and Sterling B. Baker of Jerseyville Illinois were bound over to district court on truck overload charges by Justice Richard Hotle at Ainsworth. Moreland posted 143 dollars and Baker 180 dollars to cover fines and costs pending district court appearance.

Roy Holland Iowa State Junior Chamber president from Sioux City will address the Washington Junior Chamber Monday night at The Pines at 7 o clock. Since May his election he has traveled over 20 000 miles across 16 states Canada and Cuba.
