A duck hunter, McClure, was shot three times while duck hunting four miles west of Ottumwa along the Des Moines River. He was reported in fair condition at the hospital after a group across the river unknowingly fired into decoys. He drove to Ottumwa seeking help.
Thomas Orville Hannigan of Newton was fined $100 in Justice Frank Sellman court for reckless driving after a Saturday night crash. His car jumped a street, traveled 175 feet over parked cars, and landed on a residence lawn, injuring five passengers.
Des Moines officials say the Iowa high school Victory corps is a plan to train students for post graduation war work and community war activities rather than a radical change. The program is backed by the federal Office of Education and war agencies and will be explained by John W Studebaker at the state teachers convention in November.
Cedar Rapids driver Earl N Chadd 32 released on $5,000 bail after arraignment on manslaughter charge for a crash seven miles south of the city. Lieutenant John E K Buckle 37, a naval pre flight school instructor, was killed in the other car. Connie Conklin 46, liquor store cashier riding with Chadd, was in fair condition at St. Luke's Hospital.
New London 16 year old John Scott son of Mr and Mrs Roth amore Scott died in a Burlington hospital after being accidentally shot in the head with a .22 rifle. He had returned from hunting with companions Robert and Charles Piper when the gun in Charles Piper’s hands discharged in the Piper home kitchen.
October 17 records the lowest Washington temperature since 1925 with a 17 degree reading. The month follows a record low September and a cold Sunday with morning 27 degrees and daytime high 47. The weather observer notes repeated extreme conditions.
Everett Burham will speak on bombs and Mike MecHoney on gases at tomorrow evening's session of the new citizens' defense school at the high school building starting at seven o'clock. Next Monday night Ralph Shannon will discuss propaganda and Hal Reister on fire and incendiary bombs. Following Mr. Reister's task tests will be given. Tuesday evening the school will close with an address by Ivan Norton on duties of auxiliaries in the defense organization and certificates awarded. Cotton knee pads are being manufactured to protect Red Cross workers from defense maid's knee during artificial respiration.
Chairman Earle Libe of the Salvage division calls a Washington area meeting to organize the scrap metal drive for November 6. County agencies farmers and Legion members are invited to plan farm pickups and city collection with trucks labeled and farm reports indicating metal need and cooperation.
Colonel Lewis Sanders told the Senate Military Affairs Committee that 90 percent of manpower issues can be managed under existing laws and new legislation can wait until sometime next year. Major General Lewis Hershey said the army will draft younger men from essential war plants as older workers replace them.
Chairman Karle Libe of the county salvage committee announced plans to collect old silk and nylon hosiery on a date announced later. Women are urged to save such goods and have them ready to contribute for use in war production.

Congressman Tom Martin of Iowa City and Mrs. Alda Crew of West Branch will attend, with a brief local club play.
The infant son of Mrs. Fieta Greiner and the late Lawrence Greiner of Keota died yesterday morning at 3 30 at Washington County Hospital. The baby was born Saturday morning at 11 12 at the hospital. Marsh Funeral Home Keota is in charge of burial services in Keota Cemetery.
