Police in Cedar Rapids arrested five people after a disturbance at the Roosevelt Hotel where about 75 striking workers clashed with rock, nail and brick throwing. Two officers were injured and treated and released from a hospital. The melee broke out around 1 p.m. as unions planned joint picketing with supportive demonstrators.
In Tucson Goldwater said his Thursday remark on Nelson Rockefeller's vice presidential chances was misinterpreted. He noted some Senators in Washington have discussed the idea of withdrawing Rockefeller's name rather than submitting it to further questioning.
First National City Bank reduced its corporate loan rate to 11 percent in a move to ease tight money, with Citibank also trimming loan rates by a quarter point. The action is expected to trigger further rate cuts by banks nationwide.
Ronald Dean Brown, 45, an escapee from Riverview Release Center in Newton, was arrested south of Iowa City in Frytown after allegedly robbing a woman of 41 dollars and attempting to rape her during a ride from a University of Iowa campus pickup.
ISU district employees from the Iowa Southern Utilities area attended the annual Employee Emblem Award dinner at Jack Hamilton's Club near Washington. Five, ten, fifteen, twenty five and thirty year service awards were presented after reports from company officials and a performance by Trilly Cole and The Capers. District manager Leonard DeHoet presided, praising efficiency and public relations, with remarks by Robert Brewer and other head office officials. Special guests included retired employees and their spouses, new hires and local media representatives.
UPI says Judge Sirica ordered release of all White House tape transcripts that may be used as evidence. The ruling came as John W. Dean testified for an eighth day. Sirica warned against a carnival atmosphere and urged treating the case seriously for all involved.
House Speaker Carl Albert delivering a Tulsa speech denounced President Ford’s claim that Democratic extremists threaten world peace. He warned the only war the Democrats would wage is to remove Ford in 1976. The remarks come as campaign season heats nationwide with Byrd and Jackson criticizing Ford’s tactics and economics. Reagan urged inflation resistant policy while Weicker floated an independent run. Petty pressed Mills on finances amid controversy.
API official warns Ford plan may create a huge new energy bureaucracy and one sided policy. DiBona says removing price controls could reduce inflation and lower long term prices, while price equalization for refiners could substitute for a petroleum supply allocation system under the Energy Resources Council.
Washington Junior High invites the public to an open house for American Education Week on Monday October 28. The Junior High Jazz Band performs at 7 p.m. followed by a one act play The Plum Tree directed by Donna Manfall at 7 30 p.m. The drama centers on elderly care and secrecy as three guests are taken to a state hospital. After the play parents may visit classrooms with three 15 minute classes starting around 8 15 p.m. Teachers will discuss course content and answer questions with a class schedule available. No admission charge. the public is encouraged to attend.
Washington area residents may tour Halcyon House on Saturday November 3 from 2 to 4 30 p m. The event showcases the main building and the newly completed apartment block with 24 and 32 residents respectively, with tours led by board members and spouses. Halcyon House is part of South Iowa Methodist Homes Inc with managers in Des Moines and Atlantic, serving seniors aged 62 and older seeking various apartment styles and meal options.
Des Moines reports that President Ford’s Iowa stop energized GOP efforts as Jewell Waugh notes the visit could boost 27th district Senate votes. Edgar Holden, Mary Louise Smith, and Jack Warren credit Ford’s speech and crowd of up to 15,000 for galvanizing Republican support amid questions of coverage bias and controversy.
