Washington Mennonite Church Dedication At East Polk Street

A sunny Sunday welcomed about 700 worshippers to the dedication and open house of the Washington Mennonite church on East Polk street. Pastor Dennis M Good led the service with guest speaker Rev. Peter B. Wiebe of Hesston Kansas. 425 members and guests attended the dedication, and 300 visitors toured the building and enjoyed refreshments in the fellowship hall hosted by Mr and Mrs Warren Miller. Youth class members acted as guides at the event.

Rider Killed at Riverside Race Track in Iowa

Lawrence Dvorak of Conesville died at University Hospitals in Iowa City after being struck by a motorcycle driven by Richard Weirbach of Fairfield on the Riverside track Sunday afternoon. Dvorak, an onlooker in the last race of the season, died hours later. 56 riders participated in the day’s events.

Washington County 4-H Convention Elects New Council Members

About 375 people attended the Washington County 4-H Convention at Washington High School. New 4-H Council officers were elected including Sharon Lee Steve Davis and Robyn McCoy Crawfordsville Cheryl Pfeifer Tom Berdo Bob McConnell and Jane Kearer Washington Claire Wehr Keota Andy Rowe Wellman and Larry Tener Riverside Jim Frier County Extension Director presented plaques to Busy Bees and Crooked Creek Cyclones clubs. The event featured a skit by the present council, awards for attendance, and the introduction of two new Washington girls clubs, plus honorary members.

Tonight parts are partly cloudy with cooler conditions in the west. Lows range from around 40 in the northwest to near 50 in the southeast. Tuesday stays partly cloudy with little temperature change and highs in the seventies.

Typhoon blamed in Viet plane crash

A South Vietnamese air force C47 with 31 aboard crashed near Qui Nhon due to bad weather. All were killed. Spokesmen said weather likely involved but not directly the typhoon. Rescue efforts followed as U.S. troops aided. In other clashes, South Vietnamese forces killed 40 guerrillas while B52 bombers targeted supply routes in Laos and Cambodia.

Honorary 4-H members named at Washington County convention

Mrs. Richard Fisher and Alvin Jones were named honorary 4-H members during the Washington County 4-H convention Saturday night. Fisher is noted for five years as a 4-H Photography Project Leader and for organizing tours and exhibitions tied to the theme Our Town. Jones is long associated with 4-H as a leader with Crooked Creek Cyclones, a former Swine Department supervisor, and now an insurance adjuster living in Washington.

Nixon urges caution on China and Soviet trips

President Nixon told Americans to temper expectations for his upcoming China and Soviet Union journeys in a Veterans Day radio address from his Maryland retreat. He said progress in arms talks and treaties show steps toward peace, but warned of difficult paths ahead and stressed aiding Vietnam veterans facing unemployment.

Washington High student art chosen for traveling exhibit

Two WHS students Mary F Morrison and Wendy Wi lected have works selected for the Art Educators of Iowa Traveling Art Exhibits for 1971 72. Morrison contributed drypoint etchings of a classmate head and a literary themed piece while Wi produced a graphite etching of a classmate head.

Improve school facilities at Washington High School

Editor notes a second in a series on education changes during American Education Week. Washington High School expanded facilities boosting art and woodworking spaces, crafts areas, and storage. Enrollments rose in art and shop classes. welding and mechanics moved to new spaces. A grant is sought to fund further industrial arts upgrades.
