The Chicago report notes a humorous claim that the week is National Indigestion Week with a suggestion of using baking soda for stomach relief. It cites an estimate that around 6 million people may suffer stomach discomfort during the period.
President Eisenhower heads to New York City for a day of campaigning with a 9 p.m. Madison Square Garden broadcast to rally support and counter Adlai Stevenson’s charges on the Suez crisis. He will visit the Commodore Hotel during lunch crowds before a planned week of speeches in Miami Jacksonville Richmond Dallas Oklahoma City and Philadelphia.
The will of C. R. Musser provides a five hundred thousand dollar trust fund for charitable projects in Muscatine Iowa. A board of trustees will distribute the money without regard to race creed or color. Musser, a wealthy former banker lumberman and agriculturist, died October 12.
Over 100 members and guests attended the fish fry and ham banquet in the YMCA community room. Corbin Crawford led a brief business meeting. Charles R. Stribling, new conservation officer, was introduced. Dr. Peterson announced the Lake Darling Youth Center entrance portals completion and thanked the chapter. Evelyn Cold led accordion music with Jack Hertig David DeLong Beverly Baker and Karn Coffman performing. Ben Bruns screened a color film of Lake Odessa and Lake Darling league activities.
A Texan trio of crashes left nine dead on Wednesday. A Webb Air Force Base mechanic ignored tower warnings and died after a T33 collided with a Cessna over Midland. Ground casualties included an elderly woman killed and another injured in a highway collision with a sheriff’s car responding to the incident.
Bill Norman of Washington was elected president of the Washington County Cooperative Swine Improvement Association at a Wednesday director meeting. Officers include John Knotek Riverside vice president Bob Green Ainsworth secretary Leonard Tindal Washington treasurer. Directors are Joe Jones Ainsworth Orville Penningroth Wellman George Dare Crawfordsville. The group plans incorporation scales have been bought and a tester will start after training. The association will weigh pigs at 180 days and test back fat to improve local swine stock.
Til Clifford McAdams an inmate at Anamosa Iowa Reforma tory filed suit by mail from his cell seeking 534000 for false imprisonment alleging malice and perjury by Bureau County officials and the county itself He names Calhoun W J Phelps W C Duffield and Lloyd Watson and Bureau County as defendants plus alleges 34000 personal loss He is serving 25 years for robbery noted warden Ray Purcell McAdams was part of the 1940s Coke bandits linked to several drug store robberies
The Rev. George H. Davis and his wife will address a public meeting at the Christian Tabernacle Washington on Friday October twenty six at 730 pm. Dr. W J Stevens invites all to attend. Davis has served as National Sunday School representative and traveled widely. Mrs. Davis is known for I Was a Hobo Kid and a related film shown at educational meetings. The couple plans to travel to San Jose Costa Rica in March 1957 to study language before work in Central America.
Washington High School students must submit entries by October 31 in the Jaycee sponsored Voice of Democracy contest. Local prizes will be awarded by the Washington Jaycees with three awards available. The first prize winner will record the speech for forwarding to state headquarters for state prize consideration.
Washington's Kiwanis Club visited the newly decorated Washington Youth Center after a dinner meeting at the YMCA. Bill Hammer presided as president and read a letter of appreciation for the playground fence purchased for the Washington County Special Education room at the nurses home. Tom Duncan and Harold Mangold chaired the program and led a tour of the facilities with guests George Zeck Gordon Morris Charles Morris and Dick Boettcher attending.
A Rock Island train struck the Hammes family sedan at a blind crossing two miles east of Sigourney Iowa killing eight children from one family and injuring their mother. The victims include two sets of twins Donald and Ronald 9 Karen 8 Linda 7 Gary 6 Rosemary 3 and twins Ricky and Vicky 18 months. The mother 38 was reported in fair condition at Keokuk County Hospital.
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the consumer price index rose 0.3 percent from August to September, hitting 117.1 percent of 1947-49 prices. Factory workers’ take home pay also rose, with escalation clauses set to trigger 2 to 4 cent hourly increases for about 300 000 workers.
Family Life Conference delegates to be held in Washington on October 30 are reminded to reserve noon luncheon seats by Saturday October 27. Mrs. Clayde Knupp, hostess chair, says WSCS Methodist church volunteers will serve lunch and reservations go to her at phone 295. The program targets family groups across southeastern Iowa with sociologists child welfare and gerontology leaders guiding morning discussions and a panel summary in the afternoon. William F. Kinkel of Ames will speak at the noon luncheon.
The revised Polish Communist leadership plans to mend ties with the Soviet Union. Wladyslaw Gomulka heads a delegation to Moscow as the Central Committee urges consolidation of socialism and rejects anti-Semitism. PAP reports normalcy returning, troops retreating to Warsaw Pact bases, and workers resuming work.
John S. Yoder 69 died at Mercy Hospital Iowa City after 11 days as a patient following a wagon accident when his team spooked by lightning. Funeral services will be held at his Kalona home Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with ministers Ira Nissley and Dan Hershberger. Burial in East Union Mennonite Cemetery. Survived by wife Mary Hochstetler, one son, one brother, and one sister.
The Washington Jaycees announce the annual Halloween parade to open the city party on October 31. Delmar Yoder chairs the committee with two sections for pre school and 5 to 12 year olds, prizes totaling 3 2 and five dollars, parade at 6 30 pm led by the Washington Junior High band and ending at the YMCA for prizes.
Adlai Stevenson charged the GOP with deceit and slush slogans during a two day swing through New York State. He labeled Republican tactics as misleading while pledging no deception on life and death issues and outlining plans for Poland Hungary aid and UN action. He urged the United States to push for an end to hydrogen bomb tests despite Eisenhower’s white papers.
Washington Chamber of Commerce retail committee outlines Santa arrival at 10 a.m. November 23 with a central park headquarters and letters from area children. Officials plan a November 23 24 opening with Jaycees assist, and decorations set in the business district by Santa's arrival.
Budapest residents fought Soviet troops and government forces as Hungary's civil war entered its third day. Imre Nagy pledged to seek Soviet withdrawal once order returned, while leadership purged Stalinists and appointed Janos Kadar as first secretary amid ongoing clashes in the capital.
BERCHTESGADEN Germany UP Adolf Hitler was declared legally dead. Time of death 3 30 pm on April 30 1945. Cause of death death by his own action at the Reichskanzlei air raid shelter Berlin. Lower Court in Berchtesgaden issued the death certificate. The court found he shot himself in the temple after Eva Braun took poison. Bodies were burned in the chancellery garden to prevent sensational death.
Clyde C. Jones 75 of Daytonville died at home after a two year illness. Funeral by Powell in Wellman with Rev. E M Buehler at Friends Cemetery Richland. He born December 21 1880 near Richland married Kate Waggoner in 1903 then Lillian Tuttle in 1908 living near Keota and Williamsburg before Daytonville. Surviving are his wife eight sons two daughters fifteen grandchildren.
