Martial law imposed in San Miguel district after a mob armed with hatchets and stones attacked the firm Meardi Galo and Ziemo and threatened the fiscal judge. National guard and police dispersed the crowd. ringleaders arrested as troops arrive.
Oct 25 Des Moines attorney general ruled fines could not bind across highways without Iowa legislature consent. Three pipeline firms racing to lay two east western lines face delays awaiting legislative action as work already laid crosses roads and costs rise, delaying cutting under to be done later.
William Swailes a 77 year old Columbus Junction resident died at his home Friday. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon and 2 PM at the Salem Church of God in Columbus Junction. Burial will follow in the cemetery. He was born in Virginia April 52 and moved to Union Township, Louisa County, where he became a prosperous farmer. Surviving are sons Henry Swailes Edames Swailes and daughter Lyda Swailes. daughters in law Mrs Son and Mrs Nicholson. brothers Isaac and Charles Swailes. sisters Mrs Mary Owen and Mrs Cotton, all of Riverside. His wife Sarah Raymond Swailes died January 1930. Also listed are several other relatives. Large stock and farm notes appear in the item with auctioneers and bank names.
Two Wayland residents, C. R. Miller and C. Teeper Leeper, both long-time locals, died within hours of each other. Miller, about 75, suffered a stroke and died at midnight Thursday. Leeper, about 78, died of heart disease Thursday night. Survived by multiple daughters and sons, their services were led by local ministers with burial at Center Cemetery.

In Rio de Janeiro a mixed army and navy cabinet was formed to restore order after a coup in what officials call South America's fourth revolution this year. Rio was quieter after mobs damaged streets yesterday. Deposed President Washington Luis was moved to Copa Cabana fortress for safety. An official note reported a German steamer Haden fired on and killed 17 people, including women and children, with other passengers wounded.
Services were held Friday morning for Mrs. Charles B Strabala who died Wednesday at her home east of Riverside after a paralytic stroke. The obituary notes she was born May 22, 1878, and lived in the community since 1802. Surviving children include Ward, Victor, Cecil and Violet with four brothers and sisters named. A solemn high mass was led at St Marys Church by Rev B Jacobsmeter with other clergy assisting. Interment was at Olivet Cemetery Riverside. The Riverside Legion Post voted to sponsor the town Boy Scout troop next year. The Senior Needle Club met with Mrs Ernest Salladay and guests.
Anamosa Iowa October 25 The state neared completion of its testimony against Aiverty Hartwig in the February murder of Edward Miner at Olin The prosecution cited Dr HW C Young and Dean Wilbur Teeter to support strychnine poisoning as the cause Miner's daughter in law Tilda Miner now serves a life term for another murder Hartwig allegedly bought strychnine on Feb 20 and witnesses said he gave the poison to Tilda Miner. Defense cross examination focused on Gilmore Emerson Miners son in law and alleged bias in proving Hartwig's guilt.
Keota celebrates the arrival of a $4400 Hoy er Fire Apparatus truck funded by town and county residents. The project raised 9000 dollars through city shares and farmer subscriptions while merchants staged a bargain carnival and a public auction to cover 1076 additional costs. Coach Jim Shulte guides Washington high school runners in a Thursday meet at Town City against University High. University High took first and third places while Washington finished second fourth fifth and sixth. Best time was 11 41 for two miles on the university golf course with Minder second Fredericks fourth Hesseline fifth and Helwick sixth.
