Early today in Marquette Michigan an effort to blow up the Pendill home with dynamite aimed at killing James Pendill and his relatives failed as the charge proved insufficient. No crew was involved and the family escaped unharmed.
A large fire at Perkins & Brinsmaid in Des Moines caused extensive damage to a four story building and heavy stock of china glassware valued at about 160000 dollars. Most loss was on the upper floors with 115000 dollars of stock to invoice and 37000 dollars insured. Fire began in the third or fourth story and spread rapidly. water damaged an adjoining art collection valued at 50000 dollars.
Milwaukee report notes W. D. Bynum of Indianapolis and Stuart MacKibbon of South Bend will visit Wisconsin from Oct 27 to Nov 4 and for a few days beyond. They plan to visit major points statewide, focusing on Democratic strongholds opposed to silver currency.
DeKalb county grand jury has taken up the case of Rev. George R. Parrish brought from Marshalltown Iowa on forgery charges. Identified by Rev James M Lewis as the preacher Mark Thompson who fraudulently drew 300 dollars from Castle Mosher Bank at Sandwich Illinois on July 17 1895. Parrish denies the charges and vows a vigorous defense.
At Forest Mississippi on October 25 a clash with a mob near Harpersville led to a jailing of black prisoners. Sheriff Stephenson protected the captives with revolvers as whites attacked, some prisoners fleeing into a swamp while a larger pursuit followed. Governor McLaurin urged restraint to prevent further violence. Ex-Secretary Foster opposes expansion. Chicago names a Frances Willard school building.
Spanish commissioners accept Guam cession while details on Porto Rico and the Ladrones are left to minor decisions. The Cuban debt dispute dominates talks, with the agreement that the United States may share burden only under conditions, possibly prompting Spain to seek creditors’ support if Cuba proves unable to bear its share.
Anniston Alabama October 25 The war investigating commission opened its session with Major Otto H Falk testifying as chief quartermaster for the First division Third army corps. He cited shortages in tents and transport equipment, excessive red tape, and admitted violating regulations to obtain supplies. Dr M Drake of Chickamauga Park described overwhelming sickness and poor hospital conditions yet noted low death ratio and generally better care than at home. Major Joseph Heatwole praised rations quality and quantity, while General Dodge read Seaman letter correcting prior testimony about convalescent rations and relief shipments arriving aboard the hospital ship Relief.
Montreal dispatch reports an alleged drowning of Dr W H Ireland of Tren ton Ontario and South Africa connection in a possible life insurance fraud. Detectives question the widow and trace a two hour gap before delays, while Tritonia sails to Glasgow and Ireland may have fled to New York or England. Face value of policies is 39,000 though only 22,000 is paid after 17,000 in premiums lapsed.
Mrs Reno wife of the Indiana freak who drives owls into his skull eats poisons and was buried for days. She learned he is alive in Terre Haute and plans to file divorce papers at once. The report follows a string of violent incidents and oddities from Illinois Iowa Chicago and Halifax with various accidents and legal actions.

A six-man hold up crew robs pedestrians in Kokomo Indiana then fights with officers at the water tank in Lake Erie yards. One leader is shot in the hip and all are captured. Suspects named Fisher Frank Fisher George Cook William Myers David Roberts and William Boyd. They claim to be iron basket makers from Cleveland and St Louis.
