Flyer W. D. Andrews of Miarai Oklahoma used a map printed in 1946 to locate an airport and landed in a wheat field. The plane bogged down in mud. The airport building burned in 1947 and runways have been planted with wheat every year since.
The Washington County Farm Bureau announces its annual meeting in Ainsworth on Monday evening. Dinner at 7 precedes a business session and county officers election at the Ainsworth High School gym. Nominees include Harvey Holden and Allen Snyder for President, with several other officer races and a program by Herb Plambeck and local quartet.
Winton D. Constable of Moline faces OMVI charges after wrecking his car on Highway 1 two miles south of Washington at 4 a.m. A passenger, H. W. Tipton of Moline, was taken to Washington County Hospital with lip and chin lacerations. Constable escaped injury as the car rolled four times and stopped about ten feet from the road. vehicle damage estimated at 1200 dollars.

The U S Treasury suspended sales of Tax Savings Notes to avoid nudging the 275 billion dollar national debt ceiling. The debt currently stands at 272.5 billion, leaving only about 2.0 billion before the limit. Treasury plans to borrow to cover upcoming bills.
Lake Darling Youth Center officials announced a MYF agreement with Methodist Youth Fellowship. Members from Burlington and Ottumwa districts will use the center for a one month camp from June 20 to July 16, prompting two new cabins and enhanced toilet facilities before the program begins.

Royal Dean Morrow eighteen of East Pleasant Plain was killed at 9 30 this morning when his motor scooter was struck by a truck driven by James Ledger of Pleasant Plain. The accident occurred one and one half miles south of East Pleasant Plain on the Faber corner. Morrow was driving his scooter west on a T road when he turned into the path of the Ledger truck. The body was taken to Omar Hoskins funeral home in Brighton. Jefferson county officials and the highway patrol investigated. Some speculated a parked car on the south side of the T road may have obscured vision at the corner.
Des Moines police charged Dom inicc T. Punelli owner of Toney's Grand Tavern with allowing minors to drink beer. He posted a $500 bond and a Nov. 9 municipal court hearing was set. Police said five Drake University students, later accused of raping a widow, bought beer at the tavern on several occasions.
John Houser announced six area enlistees in the armed forces. Charles Wallard and Donald Dennis, both 17, along with David Dunbar 19, Ronny Klein 17, Allard Nayadley 18, and Arnold Spohn Jr. 21, were sent to Lackland AFB for nine weeks of basic training. Spohn previously served four years and went to Offutt AFB. Wanda Spohn will join him in Wayland when possible.
In Chicago a murder victim’s family caused chaos in a courtroom when Judge William J. Lindsey directed acquittal for David Looby. The July 15 shooting of Ralph Adams prompted shouting, a police assault, and calls that the verdict was a miscarriage of justice.
In St Louis the missing half of the $60,000 ransom grows more puzzling as authorities say the money was likely never brought to the city. The case centers on Carl Hall and the capture 43 hours after the ransom pickup with about $305,000 still unrecovered. Police reopen questions about arrest details and loot whereabouts as Chief Jeremiah O Connell cautions no conclusions yet.
Parents of Washington high school football players were introduced at halftime for Mom and Dad day while the marching band marked its last home appearance of the year. Officials say cuts seem likely unless Russia or China escalates conflict or Indochina sees renewed fighting. Current aid totals about 6.6 billion dollars, with roughly 860 million for Western Europe. European Allies experience their strongest year since World War II amid higher defense spending and waning U.S. aid.
Los Angeles prosecutors filed a 1,051,400 damage suit against singer Bing Crosby by Frank Verdugo his wife Lucy and his brother in law Eualio Perea claiming Crosby drove his Mercedes Benz at a reckless speed while drunk causing a collision Oct 11. Crosby was uninjured and questioned the incident.
Funeral services for Rude W. Warfel were held at 2 30 p m Friday in Shermans funeral home with Dr FE L Haney in charge. Pallbearers were Lloyd Neiswanger S W Easter Dale Atkinson Ralph Gibson Robert Patterson Charles Mayer. Honorary bearers included Dr A W Clow Sam De Long Fred L Stewart I E Coffey W B Dupuis J E Lemmon W W Wilson James O Loughlin and Ralph Shannon. Burial was in Woodlawn cemetery.
