A Des Moines column notes Iowa state liquor stores will raise the price of a pint of 100 proof whisky by 50 cents after November 1 due to a new federal tax of $2 a gallon on all distilled spirits. All liquors and wines at 177 stores will increase. liquor commissioner Dick R Lane says the markup remains unchanged and the rise covers the extra tax.

Pilot training plane crash claims two lives near Oskaloosa
John Frank Vala 21 of Rockford died at Mahaska hospital after a Friday crash that also killed instructor Earl Schweppe 21 of Cassville Wisconsin.
