Rep. Edward Mezvinsky of Iowa told the Optimist Club that oil price spikes drive inflation and underscore the need for a U S energy self sufficiency policy. He urged conservation and reduced foreign oil imports to ease inflationary pressures during his re election bid.
A train backing into a loaded school bus at a crossing in Aragon, Georgia killed seven children and injured at least 30. The bus towed to Aragon Elementary School carried students, with 6 to 12 year olds among the deceased. Bus driver Bill Kellett was hurt. several children were trapped for 30 to 45 minutes.
Merle Miller owned car driven by Chris Beliel was totally demolished Tuesday evening after leaving the road on a curve west of Washington. Deputies said Beliel traveled on the road extending west from the end of Fifth Street when the accident happened.
A Tuesday afternoon settlement halted a Washington County District Court trial over a 1973 crash on Highway 1. Plaintiff David Montgomery Ives sought 173000 for injuries and losses. a 50000 settlement was reached with Mahaska Transfer Inc Elwood Hanna and Charles Miller. Miller lacked insurance at the time. Ives, 21, now in California, underwent four operations and 62 hospital days.
President Ford plans a Des Moines stop to rally GOP candidates in tight races including the Senate and multiple districts. About 10 000 attend the public speech at the capitol, then a 50 dollar fundraiser in West Des Moines with up to 1 500 attendees.
John W. Dean III says he took more than 15000 dollars in leftover campaign money from the White House in 1973 and placed it in an escrow account in Rockville Maryland. The funds drew no interest and have not been paid out. He details handling with Haldeman aide Gordon Strachan and notes the money remains in escrow.
Sen. Edmund S. Muskie denounces President Ford’s proposals as favoring the rich and risking recession while doing little to curb inflation. He cites higher taxes on large inheritances, a bigger minimum tax on the wealthy, payroll tax cuts, tax reform, and possible gas rationing and wage price controls as needed measures. Muskie contrasts rising unemployment and interest rates with the administration’s stance, urging tougher action from Congress.
Linda Smith, 27, of Washington, and daughter Catherine, 6, appeared in a Chicago area Quaker Oats cereal commercial after a stroll through the zoo. She has earned about 425 dollars from the ad and has yet to see the finished spot, while her husband Charles works as a power mechanics teacher at Washington High School.
Former dictator George Papadopoulos and four top associates were arrested and deported to Kea in the Aegean for conspiring against Greece's new civilian regime. Brig. Dimitrios Ioannides fled arrest and is being sought. Despina Papadopoulos, previously connected to the case, had repaid $24,650 in unlawfully paid salary.
