Actor Robert Montgomery testified that a small, well organized minority of Reds existed in the Screen Actors Guild and noted strong opposition to Anti-Communism and Anti-Fascism clauses. He disputed press portrayals and said communists and fascists were a minority in Hollywood.
Ronald Paasch, a 19 year old Four H member from Walnut Iowa, won 13 213 dollars for his 1149 pound Angus steer Mystery at the American Royal Livestock Show. The steer sold for 11 50 a pound to Allen Eatherton of the American Meat Company. Proceeds will go to Kansas Citys community chest charity drive.
Des Moines Oct 23 Winter edges into Iowa ending the Indian summer as cloud cover and rain move in from the west. Central Iowa reports a soaking rain with no measurable amounts yet, the first since last month, while cool air lowers highs to the 40s and 50s state wide.
New York October 23 Secretary of State George C Marshall said the time for action on European reconstruction is at hand and a plan is being drafted for Congress. He denied a formal Marshall Plan exists while stressing urgency and U.S. leadership. Harold Stassen urged a special session to approve aid, saying Europe aided the U.S. early on.

Warren Austin defends free press and urges UN committee to kill the resolution. Romulo and others condemn Soviet censorship and stress dangers of propaganda and loss of oxygen for freedom.
Paris Oct 23 Premier Paul Ramadier accuses De Gaulle and the communist party of policies risking collapse of the French Republic. He warns that agitation linked to unions could lead to economic ruin, civil disturbances and food shortages. Ramadier describes De Gaulle’s rally as another agitation tactic.
The AFL urges a third postwar wage rise to offset rising prices and avoid price controls. It backs voluntary measures to curb price hikes and calls on management to share data showing wage increases are possible without broader price rises.
Michigan authorities issued a murder warrant to return Paul J. Schneider 22 of Pikeville Kentucky for the pre tool slayings of two Michigan filling station attendants Donald Dusseau 24 and James K Hall 21. Schneider a dishonorably discharged Navy veteran killed the men October 5, Pikeville officers said.
Webster City reports Byron Schott and Charles Lentz riding double on a bicycle were struck by a car north of Blairsburg. Lentz suffered a broken leg and shock, rushed to a local hospital. Sheriff Lear says the car left the scene after placing the boys in the ditch and did not notify authorities.
A petition filed by Max Wolfe on behalf of his four year old son Thomas asks for 5115.75 in damages for injuries after a truck allegedly struck the boy on Davenport streets on July 1, 1947. Defendants named are Charles Whiting and H. J. Whiting. Walter Groeger of Davenport serves as attorney for the plaintiff.
The Iowa District YWCA board met in Des Moines and elected officers: Mrs. C. H. Mitchell of Indianola president, Mrs. Henry F. Tyler of Willisea vice president, Mrs. Karl Seliger of Orange City secretary, and Mrs. J. C. Holbert of Washington treasurer. Plans for Y-Teen clubs and a rural leadership program were discussed.
