United Press reports a partial settlement ends three week shipping tie up as CIO marine engineers and ship operators reach a wage rich agreement. The airline pilots strike looms with mediation boards urged to meet while TWA weighs government takeover.
Owen M. Richards of the American Dairy Association told the Milk Dealers convention in Atlantic City that decontrol frees the industry to raise output. He cited a three year plan to restore dairy cows and a quicker path of boosting per cow productivity to meet demand. He argued milk remains affordable and wage earners can buy more today than in history.
Washington dispatch reports the agriculture department voided wartime controls on fats and oils. An official said the move should soon boost soap supplies and may remove price ceilings on soap and higher priced cosmetics paints and varnishes. The OPA soap industry advisory noted the shift.
Washington dispatch reports John L. Lewis pressing for a fresh round of wage talks with soft coal miners. The government rejects the demand and suggests UMW seek a private contract so government operated bituminous mines can be released. Capt. N H Collisson outlines the position in a letter to Lewis. Lewis accuses Interior Secretary Krug of breach, citing disputes over welfare fund calculation and prorated vacation pay arbitration.
Iowa public school teachers show higher pay than 1945 46 in a state department of public instruction report. Des Moines elementary median rises to 2300, new high school pay dips to 2555 for women. overall county superintendents median hits 2720.
R G Yoder of Sigourney, candidate for district judge, visited Washington today promoting his campaign. He is Iowa’s first assistant attorney general since June, previously practiced seven years with the late Col Robert J Shaw, later as partner of former Judge Henry J Wagener. His father W A Yoder hailed from Grace Hill and his grandfather was a Dunkerd minister. He married Washington native Helen McCreedy, daughter of Charles and Mrs McCreedy, formerly residents here. The Yoders’ daughter remains.
The committee requested the oversight board to remove ceilings on soap if and when price controls are ended for edible fats and oils.
The first Wawaaian dictionary and grammar appeared in 1827 marking a milestone in language study. The work documents vocabulary and linguistic rules compiled by early scholars during that period.
United Press reports truckloads and carloads of cattle hogs and sheep moved toward slaughterhouses as markets remained strained after price controls ended. Cattle prices held near Monday levels while hogs fluctuated. receipts totaled 61 100 cattle 17 300 calves 70 500 hogs and 49 300 sheep at major markets, well below weekend highs.
The law creating the Interstate Commerce Commission was approved by President Grover Cleveland on February 7, 1887.
Samples from the 1900 foot city well go to the ED laboratory for testing and may decide whether to deepen or accept the well at its present depth. The council plans a meeting to act, with drilling likely to end and use started at about 100 feet deeper than other deep wells.

After a Monday noon luncheon the Rotary club visited the Hayes timber tract, donated to Washington county by Caroline Hayes. Dewey Stephens Jr. led the tour noting 150 year old trees and a potential lumber value up to 1500 per acre, while seeking to preserve the land for public outdoor use. Supervisors Fulton and Wiley joined the outing with guests from Minneapolis, Montgomery Ward, the Y M C A and Joyce Incorporated of Pasadena.
Donald Marlen Brinning four years old son of Leonard and Marianne Brinning died after suffocation in a soybean hopper on the Brinning farm eight miles southwest of Washington. He was found in the hopper while his father harvested soybeans on the combine. He died after emergency surgery at the University Hospital Iowa City. Funeral services set for 1 30 Thursday at L A Jones funeral home with burial at Elm Grove cemetery. He was born December 23 1941 and leaves a brother Ronald seven, paternal grandmother Mrs Henry Brinning of Washington and maternal grandparents Mr and Mrs William Hobbs of Washington.
The project progresses on the fifth house in the area while four others near completion, adding a valuable addition to the community's housing facilities.
At the closing out farm gate of W. L. Richardson the farm sold for 90.50 an acre purchased by George Wright and son. Everything sold well with sows bringing 26 a head and hogs at various prices.
Lon Burris age 65 died at 8 45 this morning at Washington county hospital after a two week illness. He lived near Ainsworth and funeral services set for L A Jones funeral home Thursday at 3 30 with burial at Keota. He was born September 25 1881 in LeRoy Illinois to Allison and Ella Burris and married Sadie Kelley November 8 1905 in Bloomington Illinois. The couple farmed near Pontiac before moving to Washington county fifteen years ago. Surviving: his wife twin daughters LeRoy Driscoll of Preston Iowa and Edward Silberhorn of South Bend Indiana two sisters Frances Bryan of South Bend Indiana and Sigford Benson of Niles Michigan and Frank Burris of Riverside Iowa and four grandchildren Ronnie Armstrong Burris lives with the grandparents.
Market news notes bids at 77.50 per head and yearling Guernsey heifers bringing 31.05 each. The text also states that one fourth of occupational deaths in the United States occur in agriculture.
Secretary of State James F. Byrnes announced that U S loans will be denied to nations unfriendly to the United States while funding will hinge on recipient need and their demonstrated friendly attitude. He said no general program exists to cut off aid to countries in the Soviet sphere. Byrnes also reported assurance from British French and Soviet ministers to begin German peace talks in New York and commented on U S policy toward Argentina.
Preliminary work has started on a one story Rock Island passenger and freight station to be built on the depot site along North Iowa avenue near the Milwaukee station. Excavation crews work footings while Marius Olsen handles concrete with subcontractors from McGrath Engineering Chicago. Engineers have laid out the area and expect rapid progress once materials arrive for the basement heating plant and partial basement.
George Kostegakes of Sioux City files a $1000 breach of promise suit against Chrisa Simoni. He alleges their Aug 28 marriage license led to a wedding feast costing $185.51 and seeks $814.49 for mental suffering plus the $185.51. Kostegakes, born in Greece, cites his late wife and three children. Simoni, born in Italy, is widowed with four children and ten grandchildren.
