George Eyman of Independence and Joe Ortega of Los Angeles were arrested by Deputy Sheriff James McDonald after trying to hitchhike from a Waterloo hotel smoke shop they had robbed. The incident underscores the perils of fleeing a crime scene.
Iowa high school students may win a Drake University semester scholarship a free trip to Des Moines and a broadcast slot on a major radio station through a combined essay and radio contest sponsored by the Iowa Tuberculosis Association. Students must write a 600 word talk on The Youths Fight Against Tuberculosis with division placement by school size. Judges pick a state champion per division and award the Drake scholarship.
Ice cream dealers of Waterloo have chosen December 12 and 18 for their annual state convention to be held in the city. L. T. Porter of Waterloo is president. Ice cream creations will feature prominently in the convention exhibits.
Helen Kuhl a 17 year old victim of a brutal hammer attack last March may undergo brain surgery this week. Dr Arthur C Brown in Council Bluffs explains skull bones sunk into brain tissue and hopes to lift them back into place. Great uncle Clarence Price, 49, is serving a life term at Fort Madison for the assault that killed Edith Kuhl.
Council Bluffs authorities identified Hetty Hansen 20 of Audubon as the girl who died by suicide in a local hotel. The maid, employed since last August in the home of Iowa Lt. Gov Nels G. Kraschel of Harlan, was found dead in a hotel room Monday.
Maquoketa reports the theft of 6500 in cash and bonds from Charlee Smith’s farm home near Spragueville is solved by a confession from Henry Hempfling. Jackson County Attorney L C Schroeder confirms the case. Smith is an unmarried resident on the Hempfling farm near the Hempflings.
Richard Mailbaum a University of Iowa graduate and playwright collaborates with Michael Wallach and Geo Haight on a new Broadway production titled Sweet Mystery of Life. Herman Shumlin produces the show with premiere performances conducted in New York City.
Loren Diddy of Perry, a cornhusker, husked 2,057.4 pounds of corn in 80 minutes to win the Dallas County ecornhusking championship. Jim Taylor of Minburn took second with 2,044.6 pounds, Milford Kinney third, Virgil Short fourth in a field of 19 huskers.
Members of the Iowa high school press association will convene at the University of Iowa next fall for their annual conference. The decision was made during the closing sessions of this year’s meeting held at Grinnell.
Washington officials warn Midwest farmers to give a strong vote in the corn hog adjustment referendum next Saturday. Officials fear low turnout may derail any program for next year. Claude Wickard notes voters will decide only on control adjustment not a new program, regardless of contract status.
Palo Alto county hosts a corn husking contest at Osgood seven miles north of Emmetsburg on October 25. Local residents and families expected to attend as competition kicks off in the harvest season.
Ten corn huskers have signed up for the county husking contest set for Oct 29 at the Winemouse farm tenanted by I. L. Embree. About 15 wagons are needed and men with wagons who will drive their teams should notify the Farm Bureau. Registered contestants include Raymond Rich Alvin Han Glen Han three Krantz brothers Crawfordsville Clarence Shull Ainsworth Elmer Aller Keota Dwight Hoyle Sidney Johnston Washington. Admission is a free will offering of a dime or more with proceeds benefiting contestants. Scott Furniture will give an electric lamp valued at about $6 to the winner.
G. H. Rasmussen, eight years with Montgomery Ward & company, moves to Washington to lead the local store. Formerly of Sault Saint Marie and Oskaloosa, he brings extensive management experience and enthusiasm for the Washington store's activity and staff. Assistant Manager Streff has filled this position.
Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant plans a homecoming week ending Oct. 27 for the inaugura tion of Dr. Harry D. Henry as president. Dr. D W Morehouse Drake University will give the main address with other speakers and student events surrounding the ceremony.
Tucker and Anderson mark one year of partnership in Washington’s used car business. They opened their own building last summer between Fast Washington and Fast Jefferson Streets near the city hall, and have since handled a substantial portion of local buying and selling activity.

O Conner and Walter Maley are named in indictments alongside about two dozen others. Max Duckworth, former county attorney, is expected as a key witness with around 50 more witnesses listed.
A total of 730594 dollars was spent in September for unemployment relief across Iowa’s 99 counties. Washington county received 663.75 dollars and Jefferson county 1462.01 dollars.

The first government funded tuition support for twelve students at Washington Junior College arrived this week. The $130.50 total will cover tuition in return for work performed for the school and will be disbursed monthly to the college officials.
Thousands of Iowa school teachers converge on Des Moines for the 81st Iowa State Teachers Association convention. Sessions run Thursday through Saturday at the Shrine Auditorium with about 10 000 attendees and speakers from Columbia New York Wisconsin and Minneapolis. The program features John Erskine Rabbi Abba Silver Grant Wood and other educators, with amateur night at the State theater Wednesday.
United Press reports mounting combat across Ethiopia as Italian forces push north toward the Sudan border and penetrate Ogaden in the south. In a key clash near Dagneres a fort was captured by Italian Somaliland troops while Ethiopian casualties ran into the hundreds. Gen Ayelleu was wounded in battle and Selassie visited front lines with troops. Rumors in Rome suggest Mussolini may set final peace terms.

William Neal Johnson died yesterday at his West Madison Street home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 30 p.m. at L A Jones funeral home conducted by Dr B F Schwarts of the Methodist church. Burial will be in the Letts cemetery. He was born March 6 1882 at Letts and married Adeline Wenger in Washington December 23 1914. He is survived by his wife, three children William Neema and Dorothy, and one sister Mrs Horace Brown of Letts.
Newcomer G. H. Rasmussen takes charge at the Montgomery Ward & Company store in Washington. Mrs. Rasmussen will join soon. Known as Ras, he is a Legion member and Mason, Lutheran is the Rasmussen church preference, and he expresses affection for small communities and their friends. Washington welcomes the Rasmussens.
