East Buffalo live stock market notes from Dunning Stevens show cattle receipts five cars dull, hog receipts twenty cars dull heavy at 9.40, sheep receipts twenty five cars lowering with best lambs at 6.90 and calves selling 5.00 to 10.60.
Frederick Gebhardt confessed to firing two shots at Anna Luther during a quarrel over money in Islip after admitting he had a wife and family in Astoria. He said he shot her as she clung to him pleading not to leave, then walked away. Trial proceeded with no defense presented.
Partly cloudy conditions across Illinois and Iowa. Indiana will be fair and cool. Wisconsin faces partly cloudy skies with a chance of rain or snow near the lakes.
The Chicago cash grain market lists No 2 red wheat at 94% 95c, No 2 yellow corn around 49% 50c, and oats at 32 32.5c. Chicago live stock shows hogs receipts 20,000 with prices from 8.00 to 9.40, cattle receipts 7,500 with steers 7.50 to 8.00, lambs 6.65 to 7.00. Omaha and other markets note mixed moves.
The Kansas City and Orient special train carrying President A. K. Stilwell and 55 officers crossed the new international bridge at Browneville to inspect lines in Mexico. Stilwell predicted a Rio Grande bridge at Del Rio within three years as the company plans the project.
Charles D. Hilles of Dobbs Ferry New York assistant secretary of the treasury has formally resigned to take effect at the president’s pleasure. He will remain until the close of the next congressional session and retire to private business on March 4.
John Headman aged 18 of Pequaming was struck by a stray 22 caliber bullet and killed while hunting partridges near his home in the copper country. The shooter is unknown and this is the first fatal hunting accident of the season.
Fire started in a social club room in Diamond Indiana destroyed twenty three budd hess houses all frame structures. The loss is placed near fifty thousand dollars. Diamond remains a dry town and the club allegedly aimed to avoid prohibition by supplying liquor to members.
Albion, Oct. 21. Farmers found William Trader, second hand dealer in this city, dead in a ditch five miles west. Initial foul play reports were ruled out after medical exam. Trader suffered a stroke while driving, toppled from his wagon. He leaves a widow and two children.
Washington reports President Taft weighs Associate Justice Edward Douglass White from Louisiana and Senator Elihu Root for chief justice. He has not abandoned plans to consider Charles Evans Hughes for the top Supreme Court post, weighing political factors in the choice.
Former head of the Western Union Telegraph Company General T. T. Eckert died suddenly. The longtime telegraph executive led Western Union during a formative era and was widely honored in business circles. His death prompted tributes from colleagues and industry associations.
Mayor Gaynor accepts resignations of Baker Burgher and Kirby and names successors. James C Cropeey becomes police commissioner replacing Baker. The special grand jury returned thirty one indictments against men in five alleged gambling houses not on the list by Acting Mayor Mitchell Warrants were issued and signed and raids began Most of the men sought were captured in the houses.
Wellesley Mass Oct 21 Miss Mary Sawyer leads a new full fire brigade at Wellesley College with each house represented by a captain. The group has started operating and is taking active steps to organize campus fire safety.
The French transatlantic steamer Louisiane ran aground on Sombrero reef about fifty miles east of Key West during a hurricane. About 547 passengers were aboard. roughly half were brought to Key West by the cutter Forward, with the rest deemed safe. Crew and remaining passengers are unharmed, and salvage plans await.
Marvin Hughitt retires after nearly twenty four years as president of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad. William A Gardner is elected to succeed him as board chair. Richard Aishton becomes vice president and William D Cantillon named general manager. Willis E Morse and Samuel Strickland receive senior positions. Chester L. is mentioned in the concluding line.
In the third game of the series the Athletics secured a victory over Big Ed Reulbach. Reulbach faced pressure from the opposing lineup as the game progressed, while the Athletics built and held a lead to finish ahead.
Gen Thomas T Eckert longtime head of Western Union Telegraph died at his Long Branch summer home at Ocean Avenue aged 88. He had been semi conscious since Sunday and death was expected. Eckert, Lincoln era friend and Western Union president for ten years, suffered a fatal accident Friday after returning to his seaside home.
A UK blast wrecked the Pwyer making plant injuring a worker who fractured his right thigh. The general, hurt by shock, declined after the incident. He leaves two sons. his wife Mrs Eckert had died years earlier. The body will go to New York for funeral services.
President Taft arrived in Washington from New York and was joined by Secretary Norton and military aide Captain Butt. Mrs Taft remained in New York to finish shopping.
The Chicago market report shows mixed hog values with light to heavy categories ranging from 7 85 to 9 25 and 8 60 to 9 20 for pigs. Cattle and sheep receipts are tallied with cattle holding steady and sheep showing gains, while overall market tone remains slow to weak.
Prevailing prices listed for commodities including corn meal and bran, hay and straw by load or bale, molasses and related feeds. Also shows per sack and per hundred rates with entries for turkeys and fowls. Some figures appear garbled but indicate typical agricultural goods pricing in the Washington market.

At DuPont mills in Wayne New Jersey nearly two tons of black powder exploded in a Corning mill. Simon Tilson in charge was torn to shreds and the only inside worker killed. Alsock a Pole died from neck injuries while pushing a car and John Forbus was fatally injured but survived after hours of surgery with speech loss. The blast alarmed the area as its noise carried for miles.
Panic swept a crowd of about 3 000 workers at the American Manufacturing company plant in Green Point after two boiler blasts. Six firemen were killed outright and two others wounded as a stampede to exit left several trampled. The bodies were badly mutilated and identification was difficult.
