Engineers, firemen and pumpmen fear losing old jobs to non union workers. Mitchell leads talks as delegates gather in Nesbitt theater to decide support for Roosevelt arbitration plan. A vote on resuming work is postponed with leaders seeking assurance and clarity on job security.
Mitchell urged workers to unionize and resume work to avert coal shortages and public hardship. He warned strikers including engineers and pumpmen that no sympathetic strikes would occur and cited mine flooding risk if pumps fail.
The convention voted by large majorities to admit newspaper reporters to all sessions open or executive.
