Mrs Clara Godlove Injured In Fall At Home

Journal correspondent Mrs Clara Godlove is recovering from a fall at home that caused a broken left arm just below the shoulder. She was treated at Washington County Hospital and dismissed. her daughter Mrs Frank Embree is with her.

Graveside services for the infant son of Mr and Mrs Lewis Thomas of Burlington were held Saturday at the local cemetery with Rev Ernest Smith presiding. The infant, born Friday, was named Francis Dale. Mrs Thomas is formerly Margaret Schmitt of Crawfordsville.

Progress on Iowa Children’s Home fund drive in Washington county

Early reports show the campaign for the Iowa Children’s Home Society progressing well in Washington county. Mrs. Joe Wolfe urges workers and chairmen to concentrate efforts in the final days before the October 31 deadline. The statewide drive aims to raise 135000 to support family boarding homes for neglected or abandoned Iowa children. Since 1888 the society has cared for more than 11000 children, including 193 from or connected to this county.

Air Scouts Organized For Washington Boys

The Scouting program expands in Washington with Air Scouts for boys 14 and older. It covers flight navigation aircraft building and meteorology plus outdoor life and model flying. The Airport club sponsors the group meeting in the basement under Dr. Mast's office on the east side of the square with Terry Ferguson as leader.

Davenport man charged with first degree murder

James Richard Smits, 36, is charged with first degree murder after allegedly stabbing his wife Beulah Smith, 37, in Bettendorf in front of her 17 year old daughter Delores. Smits was arraigned and ordered held without bond, with a hearing set for next Friday.

Funeral services for Willis Beaty held in Sherman’s Funeral Home

Funeral services were conducted at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon at Sherman’s funeral home with Rev. T. Polk officiating. Soloist Milo Sorden led the music. The $5.601 billion tax increase heads to President Truman for signature to become law. Higher excise taxes on liquor beer cigarettes gasoline and autos would start Nov 1 unless signed earlier. Individual income tax withholding rises about 11.75 percent with the first bracket tax up to 11 percent and the overall rate to 22.2 percent for a typical 20 percent taxpayer.

Ministers Discuss Scouting Program in Protestant Churches

The Boy Scouts of America assembly in the Iowa River Valley region studied the Scout program and its role in Protestant churches. Dr. A. E. Iverson led the session with others including Martin Hunter Gib Putnam and Earle K. Behrend in attendance. Chinese Apparently Have Withdrawn From Key Position

United Nations tanks struck the communist held Kumsongs and bombarded the road to Kunsong for an hour before withdrawing with no casualties. Two M-46 tanks led an assault into Kunsongs outskirts at 4 p.m. as Allied forces pushed toward the town. After overcoming enemy positions under heavy fire the tanks pulled back, leaving hills south of Kunsong held by Chinese communists.
