Des Moines traffic enforcement agencies say they will blacklist and penalize motorists who exceed the 35 mile per hour wartime limit. Future speeders face tracking by all agencies except the FBI, with court records reviewed to ensure adequate penalties were given.
A Sunday blaze in Lakota destroyed four structures near the Gutknecht hardware store and International Harvester Co. outlet. Mrs. Harry Warburton woke to smoke and alerted others as the fire spread to Shutter's furniture store and funeral home. Dr. P C Geilenfeldt, Lakota fire chief, saw his veterinary office burn from embers carried a quarter mile. his equipment survived.
Ames Iowa farmers bear the blame for many pheasant deaths as field work harms nests. Thomas S Baskett, former wildlife extension specialist at Iowa State College, cites a three year survey showing plowing disking mowing and raking reduce hatching. He notes farmers lack real options and most nests are well protected.
Dubuque youth Raymond William Quillan 18 suffers mangled left arm when a bus he rode with an outstretched arm was struck by a truck near Hanover Illinois. Attending physician says the boy likely had his arm out the window at impact.
Five children aged from 5 months to 11 years were in a small house east of Ottumwa when a fire damaged the structure. Raymond Lewis of Ottumwa broke a window to rescue Allen Lindsay, son of Mr and Mrs Gene Lindsay, who were away in Ottumwa during the blaze.
A goat named Hit ler Hirohito sold at a war bond rally and auction in Algona for a total of $11,400 on Saturday. The event drew local buyers and showcased livestock alongside the fundraising effort.
German air raiders bombed and strafed 28 East Anglia towns as London endured three daylight alerts in a surge of enemy activity unseen in months. At least eight killed, several injured, two raiders shot down. Low clouds aided hit and run attacks. anti aircraft guns fired near London. No reason given for the spike in raids.
The Washington county Employment service office will close for the entire day. The office sits on the north side of the square above the Nicola and Harmon book store and is under Mrs. Albert Lay.
The county rationing office says fuel oil dealer registrations are postponed from October 20 and 21 to October 27 and 28. Consumer registrations shift to start October 29 instead of October 22.
Rev W J Stevens announces the former Foursquare Tabernacle on South Marion Avenue will be used for storage during the war. Afterward it will become a parsonage for Christian Tabernacle’s pastor. The building already houses some stored furniture. The adjacent dwelling, once the parsonage, was sold to Harold Jarvis for a residence.
Forrest B. Schwengels spent yesterday in Davenport visiting his mother and brother, continuing family ties in the community.
At Algona the sale of an unwanted man named Hitler Hirohito proceeds through an auction. Chairman A. E. Kresensky notes the individual is not welcome here and is taken to Clarion to continue the bidding process there.
Funeral services for Amos J. Rankin will be held Tuesday at 3 p.m. at L. A. Jones funeral home with Dr. R. C. Keagy in charge, followed by burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Rankin, 87, a longtime Washington resident, died Saturday evening in Moline Illinois after a motorcycle strike. An inquest ruled accidental death. the rider was not held at fault. Rankin was a noted local businessman and community figure. He was born March 18, 1855 in Fredericksburg Ohio and lived in Washington county since 1871, later serving as custodian of the commercial club building.
Senators La Follette and Thomas propose five measures to extend old age and survivors insurance fair wage rules and labor board protections to 7,000,000 agricultural workers. The bills cover wage boards, private contracts, and National Labor Relations Board benefits for farm laborers, exempting small family farms. Based on California agricultural labor findings, the plan aims to mobilize farm workers for wartime effort and postwar stability.
Civilian pilot training screening tests, held recently in Washington, will be conducted Friday evening at seven in the Muscatine junior college building. Supt. BK. A. Ralston announced that men wishing to take these examinations may go to Muscatine to qualify for pilot training.
A Washington resident died on February 14 1939. He is survived by three daughters Mrs Ralph Thompson Mrs Donald Bell both of Washington and Mrs Denzmore Guthrie of Moline. One son and one daughter are deceased.

Four Delta youths died when two cars collided Saturday night two miles west of Sigourney on Highway 92. Six others from Mahaska and Keokuk counties were injured, two seriously, including a 20 year old husband whose wife was among the dead. The deceased are Ward Dawson 20 Ruth Rohloff 20 Mrs Rex Rogers 19 and Freda Stevens 18.
All heavy asphaltic oil for street surfacing has arrived and work can finish soon if weather holds. New streets not previously surfaced are done and remaining oil is used to resurface or repair. After completion most Washington residence streets will be paved or coated with rock and asphalt, leaving only minor streets dirt free and dust reduced.
H. Peters spends several days on a pheasant hunting trip in South Dakota with plans to hunt the fields, noting favorable conditions and hunting opportunities in the region.

Celestine A Marie 74 died Saturday evening at her home 708 West Main Street from a stroke. Funeral services will be at St James Catholic Church Tuesday at nine with Rev H J Corcoran. burial Elm Grove Cemetery. Rosary at 8 tonight at Shermans Funeral Home. Survived by two brothers Dr J A Marie and W J Marie, sisters Mrs George S Dempsey Davenport and Mrs Edward A Swift Knoxville, and many nephews. One brother Dr George Marie deceased.
County salvage chairman Karle Libe calls for strong turnout and discussion at the upcoming meeting to set the next salvage collection dates and decide if business houses should have a closing day. He requests all township and city chairmen attend.
Senate majority leader Alben Barkley signaled support for an amendment to ban alcohol around military posts if a roll call vote occurs. Senator Josh Lee will push the prohibition while Senator Arthur Vandenberg urged an 18 year voting age aligning with the draft.
Mrs. Lyle Bartlett 38 died Sunday in Fort Madison Iowa after an illness since last August. Funeral services by Rev. Robert Swick at Sherman's funeral home and a Fort Madison service will be held Tuesday morning. Burial in Elm Grove cemetery. Born Vera Iva Page May 13 1904 in Washington county daughter of William Ede ward and Ida Shuman Page. She married Lyle Bartlett in Chicago June 10 1985 and they have lived in Fort Madison the last three years. She is survived by her husband her mother and a brother Ray V Page of Washington.
