Ray mond Rich of Winfield won the Henry county corn husking contest in Mount Pleasant on Friday. Rich, 1939 Henry county champion, husked a net of 2 391.5 pounds. Bure dette Hudson of Mount Union took second with 2 825.5 pounds.
Robert Guinther a Democrat and former Willkie partner from Akron Ohio spoke at a Republican rally in Ottumwa He described Willkie as energetic intelligent and willing to serve his American Legion and others in the community
The Brayton town hall a 35 by 7 11 foot cement block building was dedicated with banquet and dance. Built for 14661 with WPA contributing 8161. A U S flag once flown over the Capitol in Washington was unfurled and presented to Brayton by Representative Ben F Jensen of Pxira.
Des Moines report states the Iowa highway patrol will replace warning slips with memorandums of violation. Duplicates of all memorandums issued on the road will be filed with the state driver's license department.
Fireman J J Murphy assistant chief of Boone Corps collapsed from smoke while fighting a roof fire and died later in Boone county hospital. A 15 year veteran and war hero with a purple heart he was well known in veteran circles.
Henry Allen former Kansas governor attacked the New Deal in Panora comparing Roosevelt and Wallace nomination tactics to Nazi methods. He accused subversive elements within the administration and said insiders sought to create a government within a government while urging support for Wendell Willkie.
Democratic candidate John K. Valentine, campaigning in Cres ton, claims the Wilson administration increased expenditures by 8.7 million dollars, six and a half million more than the prior administration, and charged the Republicans with lacking economy.
Governor Wilson told a Republican gathering that bringing the highway commission under state budget controls has saved Iowa about 1.1 million dollars annually. He said the legislature fixed the budget and general appropriations included the commission’s expenditures, countering claims of extravagant Republican mismanagement.
Polish pianist Thaddeus Kozuch praised by Vladimir Horowitz will headline the final March concert of the Washington concert league series with Virginia Haskins. John Neher, a six foot two hundred pound bass baritone, receives acclaim for his rich tone and technique. Virginia Haskins, 21, debuts with the Chicago opera company to headline alongside Kozuch. Storm Bull, descendant of Ole Bull and Grieg, is hailed as the era’s greatest young pianist and is highly anticipated for the series.

Judge P J Siegers announced he will return to Washington for a brief court session on Friday Oct 25 after a day in county court in Newton. Robert Wingler of Iowa City was arraigned on a manslaughter charge. he lacks funds for an attorney and George P Morrison was appointed counsel. Bonds set at 3000 dollars. Wingler remains in the county jail serving a one year sentence for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.
Storm Bull, powerful Norwegian pianist, to headline the opening Washington Concert League drive and a November 26 concert. A January program features Kate Havas and John Neher, with a March finale including Virginia Haskins and Thaddeus Kozuck. Membership drive targets 600, with 200 student slots, no single tickets, and campaigns led by Mrs Baldrige and four captains.
Washington county registrants for the draft have increased as cards arrive from other county boards. On registration day 133 from other counties registered in this county, part of a total 2 085. The county total rose from 1 953 to 1 984. This morning 24 cards arrived from Sigourney Bloomfield Albia Fairfield Cedar Rapids Avoca Knoxville Muscatine Greenfield Algona and Corydon. Serial numbers are affixed as received and a county list is being compiled at the draft board office, to be finished early next week.
Des Moines reports Col Ralph C Lancaster says Iowa guards not officially notified of mobilization. War Department schedules Iowa contingents of the 34th Division to Camp Beauregard Louisiana and 218th Cavalry to Brownwood Texas. Iowa troops to be mobilized Jan 3 to 19 for one year of training to aid draftees.
An explosion at the General Petroleum refinery in Torrance California today destroyed a gasoline cracking plant injuring three workers one critically. Flames and spilled gasoline covered about 80 acres and residents mistook the blast for an earthquake. firefighters expected the blaze to stay away from a nearby large gasoline reservoir.
Diplomats warned southeastern Europe risks as Germany and Italy plan strikes near the British empire in the near east. Turkey and Greece expect British aid and brace for possible axis moves, with Soviet Russia’s stance cited as a key factor.
Rev Claude Breidenthal of the Christian church will be the guest speaker Tuesday evening at the Methodist men's club. He is a popular speaker. The club meets monthly with special programs planned for the next six months. The 6:30 supper will precede the program.
Washington county highway patrolman Donald Braden attended the district inspection of highway patrolmen at Ottumwa yesterday. Sixteen patrolmen from the tenth district, covering twelve counties in the southeastern part of the state, stood for the inspection conducted by Lieut. Cole Conley. The patrol cars and all equipment were inspected.
Royce Lyons of Keota won with 2 843 net pounds in 80 minutes to top a field of twelve from Keokuk and Washington counties in a county corn husking contest held near Keota. Ernest Krantz took second with 2 767 pounds and Ralph Krantz third with 2 757.
State Patrolman Ben Bentzinger issued five drivers licenses after tests at the court house. Recipients include R. M. McCracken and Everett F. Curtis of Crawfordsville, Homer J. Yoder of Wellman, Donald Davis of Washington, and Clifford Murdick of Riverside. Robert Bidwell of Wellman received a chauffeur license. Two failed chauffeurs tests and one failed drivers test.
The estate of Daniel P. Clapp of Tipton, previously closed four years ago, has been reopened.
Washington county plans to take its large corn map to the national corn husking contest near Davenport. The map, sponsored by Pioneer Hi-Bred Corn, will be disassembled and shipped in units for three days of display. O. E. Schmitt will supervise the exhibit with Washington volunteers handling erection and removal.
The Presbyterian church Women's Missionary Society voted yesterday to protest the use of the airport on Sunday. They referenced the airshow scheduled for tomorrow and informed the Journal of their stance.
