Prairie City report notes a dog standing over a dead man named John Verought, 61, as doctors determine death from heart disease. The dog had to be knocked out before a physician confirmed the cause.
The state board of criminal investigation was asked to aid in locating 54 year old Mrs Della Hendrix who vanished from her Red Oak home on October 15. Relatives say she may be hitchhiking to her daughter’s Montana residence and appealed for help.
Elkader dedicates the United States first glass-block schoolhouse replacing the old red brick building destroyed by fire last May. The structure features 16 000 glass blocks used extensively and relies on complete mechanical air conditioning. Interior walls are concrete cinder blocks, exposed and painted, with a centrally controlled radio and full public address system across all rooms.
Four youths aged 12 to 15 admitted dismantling five bicycles and discarding frames in the Cedar River. They spent hours trying to reassemble the bikes, with many parts missing but some replacements found.

The Washington city council discussed temporary repairs to Elm Grove cemetery road under Street Commissioner Blaine Holmes. They plan a clay foundation fill, concrete slab, reinforced shoulders, and crushed rock top coat. Permission was granted to survey land owned by Mrs. Boyd Berdo for a new road, with state engineers to be sent to stake the proposed route next spring.

The annual salary is 450 dollars, payable monthly, with the ordinance to take effect upon official publication.

County Agent W J Rouda Bush announced a Washington county corn husking contest for Wednesday October 27 at the Amial Chabal farm eight miles northeast of Washington. Entry must reach eight contestants with four already signed Virgil Ralph Elmer Krantz and Dwight Hoyle entered. If enough entrants appear the event starts at 11 am with a novelty two minute contest for businessmen who have not husked corn in ten years.
A Washington county Iowa alumni banquet is planned for November 1 with a turkey dinner at 7 p.m. in the Methodist church served by the Ladies Aid society. The event falls on the Monday before Homecoming and features color photos of the Iowa football team’s trip to Washington State to be shown if ready.
Washington County representatives Warren Bush Morgan Amos Stout and Wayne Norman head of the county soil conservation body attend a United States Senate agriculture committee hearing on farm problems in Sioux City. The hearing opened yesterday and runs three days with farmers from several states seeking ideas for future farm legislation for a special session next month.
Rescuers reached a snow bound northeastern Utah peak to find 19 people dead after a United Airlines mainliner crashed. J Wesley Myers guided the first rescue party, with Ralph Johnson reporting the wreckage and deaths from Knight Wyoming.
